As a software engineer myself, it seems conceivable... if not likely, that this button was put in for the developers of iPhoto to make sure they were correctly deciphering the GPS EXIF tags. Perhaps it was never made into a feature because Apple didn't explore the ramifications (security, advertising, competiveness, etc) of shuttling users from within iPhoto over to Google.
I think assuming this portends some future gadget or reading anything into it is rampant speculation about nothing.

EDIT: I also note that my copy of iPhoto 6.0, released in January, has this hidden button as well... so it's been there for a while now.

If you are certified, there is some great drift diving just offshore. Take a camera with an underwater housing. At least that's what I do when go down to WPB.
You can PM me for a dive op recommendation if needed. :)

Do you think there will be different jailbreaks for the AT&T and Verizon models being that they're different chipsets?
I hope not it's not like the iPhone where the Verizon version would not only get updates later, but jailbreaks as well.

Nice -- i think this MBP 1,1 in question was bought used (through macofalltrades) but was once under applecare as well. I think that might tip the scales in his favor a bit as well.

But the fact remains, most new cell phones in the U.S. at least already have GPS built in so the location of the phone can be tracked by emergency responders.
Actually I was told by someone that should know that all the GSM networks don't support the GPS subcarrier and calculate your position by tower triangulation instead. Since GSM is the dominate form in the industry in the us (unless Sprints bigger than I think) most phones probably don't have GPS built in. (just an interesting factoid)
And yes a cellphone/camera/GPS thingee would be cool but they can't forget the essentials and a phone without voice dial is a phone not worth having no matter what other features it might have. I mean don't all states have a 'handsfree only' while driving law by now?

I have 12mb/896k DSL through Qwest and pay $51.99 a month right now and it goes up to the normal price $64.99 in a year. That is with a home phone through them as well.

I am planning to attend the Apple store launch event. I'm still unsure of what time I will arrive. It will likely be sometime after lunch. I hope that those of us arriving in the afternoon aren't late to the party.
I distinctly remember people lining up for Xbox, Wii, and PS3 launches hours and hours ahead of time.... like 8 to 12 hours ahead of time.....
Surely that's not the case here?

In the advent of "smarter" smartphones I see no need for portable systems (for me at least).
Nintendo and Sony should take note (with the Xperia Play it seems at least Sony* have already).
*SonyEricsson really.

Those are done with a background image:
http://komotion.com/wp-content/themes/komotion/styles/blue/button_sprite.png
The mouseover effect is using javascript to change the opacity of the image -- it makes it slightly more transparent (80% transparent), which gives the "lightening" effect. Nice little effect!
Just keep in mind as well that the transparency trick doesn't work in IE so make sure you have a fall back in those instances.

I have an ultimate 11 inch machine. 4 gigs, 1.6 processor. The 4 gigs is perfect, but
1) I would like the processor to be a little bit faster. Some apps that I run, are just a "bit" laggy.
2) I would also like 256 gig SSD. I actually think I need about 200 gig.
3) I would also like a bit more physical screen size.
It's almost perfect.
If by "a bit more physical screen size" you meant a bigger display, you have just described the 13" MBA, 1.86GHz with 256GB SSD and 4GB of RAM, $1699 ($1799 with a 2.13GHz processor).

so i know everyone always says that apple cant actually tell that you jailbreak you phone if you just restore it, but is this actually true?
i want to know because my home button has been finicky (it sometimes doesnt work), and since I have a warranty i want to make sure that apple will still service the phone if it dies completely.
now i know all of the crazy super pro-jailbreak people will come and be like "no there is absolutely no way that they will be able to tell of course blah blah blah" but does anyone actually know this for certain (proof?)
it seems like they would be able to check some log or something and it will look like you have not used your phone for like a month or however long you had it jailbroken and they will figure it out. or it seems like they would have some other way to detect this. they are apple and they are crazy opposed to jailbreaking so are you completly sure that there is no way they can tell? i really want to jailbreak because it is awesome but i bought the warranty and since my home button might break i want to make sure it will still be covered.

Anyone else remember those old rumors about how MS was buying VPC just to kill it off? I thought that was silly back then, but I'm wondering now. Considering how they sat on the thing for ages and never really did anything with it and now have caved at the first sign of competition, you have to wonder. They clearly were not very committed to keeping it going.

You can only use 2.5" S-ATA HDDs, the biggest is currently a 1TB or 1.5TB one. 2TB HDDs are usually desktop HDDs and are 3.5" in size.
That's a good start, thank you. Saves me banging my head against a wall looking for larger. I understand that the physical height of the drive is quite important too, any ideas?

I'll be honest in saying if apple brought out a PDA/Phone/Camera thing out I'd walk over glass to get it.
If they do it right they will sell millions, Nokia especially have kind of lost their way with the new N series phones, very buggy :(
With microsoft already having a phone available and the Zune, which may have phone functionality its a must.
At least in Europe most of my friends carry an iPod and phone around with them at all times. The new Sony Eric phone I have now is actually good as a walkman and I;ve thought about stopping carrying the iPod.
So Mr Jobs if u ever read this, pull your finger out and make one! preferably GSM/UMTS :)

Define "need to use." I use Pages for all of my reports, and output to PDF for presentation to my clients. If they need a Word version, I export it as Word. Never had a single complaint. I present in Keynote quite often, sometimes saving the slides in PDF form. Never had a complaint there either; in fact the Keynote presentations in particular get rave reviews.
I don't get why people manufacture so many impediments that don't exist to using something other than MS Office. I would loathe the thought of being chained to MS Office, or anything else for that matter, for the rest of my life.
Exactly, I use Pages and Keynote at School for my Engineering classes all of the time. I never have any problems but if there were a problem then I would save the document in .PDF in Pages or Keynote or possibly as a quicktime movie in Keynote. I just don't get what problems besides missing font problems people have I guess....
That does remind me that Pages needs an equation editor though. I have been using MathType to copy and paste equations into Pages or Omnigraffle if I am doing a schematic and would like an equation editor in both of those programs. Omnigraffle could use better dimensioning tools before it will be a full Visio replacement too.

I keep reading about MacRumors members running into each other at Target, Best Buy, etc. Since this is a huge forum, full of individuals with a shared love for Apple products, I thought I would throw this out there.
Have any of you members met each other in order to make a trade that is mutually beneficial? I ask because I have a brand new, unopened 32GB Black WiFi only iPad 2 that I bought from Target on Wednesday. I haven't opened it because I'm hoping to find a white version with the same specs.
Anyone within 50 miles of Champaign, IL (61820) have an unopened white version and looking to get the black version. If so I would be willing to meet and do a straight up swap somewhere in the middle of our locations.
Chances are slim, and I won't die if I have to wait but I thought I would take a shot. Also, if Target takes back iPads that are opened and don't charge a restocking fee then I guess I could just open the one I have and use it until I find a white version. Anyone else using this tactic?
