I can understand people's impatience with Apple for not having a complete AppleWorks replacement already, but if you look at their long term plans for iWork it makes perfect sense. If you start out with a solid foundation it is easier to make improvements so follow my thinking:
"iWork '03"
Keynote 1
iWork '05
Keynote 2 - improvements
Pages 1 - introduced and is a cross between a word processor and a page layout program. Handles the basics of both well but lacks "pro" features
iWork '06
Keynote 3 - improvements
Pages 2 - gets table cell formulas, sorting, number formatting (preparation for spreadsheet app), comments (colaboration), thumbnail view (page finding, ordering, deleting), address book support (mail merge), endnotes, automatic text correction, and general improvements to features already there.
iWork '07
Keynote 4 - improvements
Pages 3 - gets modes which separates word processing tasks/items from page layout tasks/items (reduced clutter), ability to create custom formulas.
Spreadsheet 1 - can import/read Excel data, save as/export to Excel file, basic reporting, there will be a way supply the charts in Keynote and Pages with data, plus whatever Apple adds
iWork '08
Keynote 5 - improvements
Pages 4 - word processing and page layout tasks are improved to the point where they are looking like two separate apps
Spreadsheet 2 - general improvements, reporting feature gets most improvement by being able to "drill" down through pie charts.
iWork '09
Keynote 6 - improvements
Pages 5 - improved to the point where it is only a word processor now.
Page Layout 1 - "New" app that has broken away from Pages and is now the "iApp" of DTPs. This could happen in iWork '08.
Spreadsheet 3 - Gets ODBC support
Database 1 - most likely SQLite, or equivalent, with a sweet front-end. Hopefully, it will be a true RDBMS and not something like what came with AppleWorks.
Reports 1 - (ie Crystal Reports) This is a stretch but if not a separate app then more of an "engine" that is used by the spreadsheet and database apps.
I do not use Keynote which is why I only entered "improvements" next to it.
I hope for Apple's sake it doesn't take until 2009 to get a database app. iWork '07 better be able to do everything Appleworks and MS Works can and like those application it better ship on consumer machines free of charge.

Yeah, the AppleInsider article provides quite a bit more detail.
including the orientation sensor that I mentioned...
Taking things a bit further, Apple said the electronic device "may be capable of rotation and may have an orientation sensor for determining the orientation of the device." Based on the sensed orientation, the areas on the bezel designated for the user controls could then be altered or relocated to match the current orientation. Likewise, the company said, the user interface software operating on the device can alter the location of the visual guides to match the current position of the areas on the bezel designated for the user controls.

iDive looks like a good way to catalog. I'll check it out. Do you suggest importing in DV format or any other one?
You're coming from 8mm tape. DV can't make it any worse and anything else (IMO) would be overkill in terms of space for no increase in quality, either during acquisition, editing or output.

the ipad 2 just came out. Can you at least give it a month before talking about jailbreak.
more than 1/5 the world do not have theirs yet. Like people in villages of Africa are waiting, people in Asia as well. People from rural america as well.
Chill
if the devs didn't want people begging for a jailbreak, they wouldn't publish a screenshot weeks and weeks prior to actually releasing it. they get off on it... which is why they do it every single time. threads like this annoy me too, but the best solution is to just ignore them.

...The computer would use something like Photoshop FL edition (For Ladies) to make them look like Kate Moss, Suzanne Summers, Petra Verkaik or their favorite star. A brave new world...
...who would want to look like any of those women? They all look kinda...
well, let's say there are people that look a lot better.
Eh, maybe I just don't want to look like the thighmaster seller. :p

"I haven't even gotten a chance to use this baby, I haven't been able to get it working/turn on even once.
What is the problem here?!"
I'm going to _guess_ that there's something that's not right with the particular cable you have right now.
I'd suggest obtaining another cable from _a different_ source. If the results are the same, then you can start looking at other areas.
But I'd replace the cable first.
Suggestion:
For a replacement cable, try monoprice.com.

Hey guys,
I need alot of help. I convinced my sister to get an iBook a few months ago. I told her that mac is way easier than PC. Now it appears that her computer is freaking out. She is calling me for tech support and I don't know how to help her. She is having very strange problems. So I will have a series of threads to help me with these problems, I would greatly appreciate any input.
First problem: She was having trouble with video (I will get into this later) and I told her to repair permissions, prebind, etc. To do this I had her get Cocktail, I figured it would be the easiest way.
Now, after she ran it, she cannot open Microsoft Office or iPhoto. Office is the most pressing problem because she is a student. When she opens it she gets an error message telling her she has corrupt fonts (see attached pic). She then has to force quit, nothing will work. I would suggest a reinstall but she left the CD at home (the parents are mailing it up, so this will be an option later). I have ran out of ideas, but hate to leave my sister stranded! ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX THIS?? Thank you all so much.

Who here saw "Commander in Chief"? ... Any thoughts?
Just finished watching it on tape and enjoyed it very much. I was hoping it would be decent and it more than surpassed my expectations. Fine performances, good storylines and not the least bit boring giving the political nature of the show.
Now there is something entertaining and engrossing to follow "The Biggest Loser" on Monday evening ... this one may actually prove to be a bonafide winner.

Hi,
Ok, i know this site is by it's nature about gadgets, but for me it's all about the carrier.
I've had 8 different carriers in the last 10 years. Many of them have merged/
changed names/gone out of business.
When i see people complaining about their carrier, it's always about coverage
dropouts. Folks, ALL carriers will have SOME dropouts, especially if you live
in a challenging physical terrain.
What i found more aggravating is how obtuse and unresponsive these companies are. This is an area of modern commerce that is barely regulated.
Politicians have been lobbied to allow a wild west mentality for an industry
that has insinuated itself into most of our lives in just a short time.
I've had carriers routinely sneak in extra charges. Representatives have no
compunction about lying. I don't know about you, but i don't have time to
audit my bill every month with a magnifying glass.
Each carrier was worse than the last. The most annoying thing? Being
put on hold for 40 minutes, than disconnected. This is intentional. They don't want to be accessible.
Finally the last time i switched i did a search to see which companies had the least complaints. Although the billing practices overall in the industry
are atrocious, i've had the best experience overall with my current carrier.
This trumps any pleasure i would get from having a phone that integrates
well with my macs.

The Finder brushed metal will be the last surprise change to the UI. Brushed metal is so 2004. Probably we'll see a radical change to Finder?
My guess, we'll see buttons and soft gradients, like those on the Apple store (Mac Book Pro) pages.

Then again, if you can afford said thousands, just buy the bluetooth keyboard separately and keep the wired as a spare!
This. I had my BT module act up once, so if I didn't have the wired one in the closet, I would have been stuck until Best Buy opened the following day to buy a wired one.

T-Mobile is the low-end carrier. Who on this green Earth uses them? They serve no purpose.
Cingular if you want GSM/SIM cards
Verizon if you want the widest American network
Sprint if you want cheapest/fastest unlimited data
T-Mobile if you.. um.. if you're 11 years old and think Sidekicks are cool?
The only way this will go well is if Apple does an MVNO. They need control of "the whole widget."
