...I am pretty much disappointed after waiting months for a refresh that was suppose to be a substantial upgrade over last years iMacs. I think alot of us had unwarranted expectations due to the HUGE increase in the MBP performance.
Here is where I am coming from. I am an accountant so spending money were a return isn't realized is against what I believe in. Therefore, I planned to buy the base 27" version. So many times before this refresh I was tempted to buy the base 3.6ghz dual core that was available. I am still a fan of a high clock speed because it makes a difference in daily single and dual core tasks. However, I waited mainly due to most on this forum stating I would regret it and the upgraded processors were going to be substantially better.
Let's compare the benchmarks:
32 bit
3.6ghz dual core (last year) - 7,000 average
2.7 quad core (sandy bridge) - 7950
64 bit
3.6ghz dual core (last year) - 7,745
2.7 quad core (sandy bridge) - 8625
Is this really a substantial jump? You take away clock speed (even though you do have turbo boost to 3.7) and add two cores and you get less than a 1,000 point increase.

I can just foresee, if there are faulty CDMA units, a massive discussion over which of the two companies are the "better" manufacturer with less defects - Foxconn vs. Pegatron. I only bring this up, as I recall heated discussions in the past about how Nokias made in Finland were superior to the ones made in China or how Canada made Blackberries were better than the Mexico made ones. It'll turn into: "Get the model with serials.. XXXXXX made by Foxconn, over the ones with XXXXX from Pegatron" or vice versa.

I was hoping that having a render going would be sufficient to tell the system that the computer is in use and do not sleep.

Like a bunch of the posters already, I was in the second period of the day in my High School. The headmaster came into my class and asked us to gather in the chapel with the rest of the school. I have to admit, my first reaction before I knew anything about the trajedy was, "Sweet, no more Latin today."
It was pretty scary actually since my school was about 100 yards from the National Cathedral in Washington DC and there was some concern among the administrators that it might be a target. I ended up walking the three miles home with my mom who had to walk the whole way home from her work since the city was basically shut down.
I remember in the weeks after that every plane I saw descending toward National Airport looked like it was coming in too fast and too low to be normal.

No... that was a lot of people getting confused. MS was giving away VirtualPC which is a Windows product. They never were giving away any Mac products, nor were they intending to as far as we know.
Yes, but we don't exactly know when that will come out. Look for it AFTER Vista (if that can happen) ;)
NO!
Universal Office will arrive in Approx. Late Sept-Nov.

I already heard this news about AT&T... alot of sources have already reported AT&T stores won't have any iPhone 4's on launch, but my question is regarding Apple Stores. KRON reported Apple Stores won't have any available on launch day for walk-ins. I doubt this is true, but wondering if anyone else has heard this?

I loved the Blue Album, but the other album I tried from them, the Green Album, I didn't really like. Still, this is half the price, so I downloaded it anyway :p
Man, I have no self-control when it comes to music

Why don't you just split the audio with a Y adapter so that you don't have to switch it. It will just always be active. This to me seems like a cheaper and better solution.

I second setting up a local DNS, you could use BIND on an existing mac or recycle an old PC and install BIND on linux, use os x server, etc.
Other things to consider, if your hosts are obtaining IP addresses via DHCP you'll have to configure your DHCP server to assign the local DNS server IP address, right now it's probably assigning the IP address of your router/gateway you'll also need to set the search domain for your hosts so you don't have to type full domain names everytime.
If hosts have static IPs don't forget to manually set the DNS server IP and search domain.
On your DNS server, just set the forwarder IP address to what the DNS IPs are in your current router configuration, your ISPs DNS or you could just use OpenDNS servers which is what I usually do if I set up a local DNS server.
Did a quick search on the web and found this: http://www.macshadows.com/kb/index.php?title=How_To:_Enable_BIND_-_Mac_OS_X's_Built-in_DNS_Server ... could be useful. If you browse around enough you could find a way to do it on an existing Mac w/o installing server OS.

would audio apps be considered creative apps or is this a visual creation only thread?
if it counts, i love the Generator Synth AU (Audio Unit) plugin, i use it in Ableton Live 4.1
Stiwi @ Alphakanal (http://www.alphakanal.de) made the plug and its free. Though it will be getting a new name and update in a week (because of copyright issues with the name "Generator")
its very cpu effecient and highly stable. its one of the only soft synths i trust in a live performance situation and its only going to get better.

OMG! That would be awesome - a phone that's a GPS Navigation that you could load where you're going in the phone with relevant picture pointers 'you are now passing MacDonalds on your right handside' and picture flashes up on your phone of the location taken by another user of Googlemaps... while you're driving in the car...
That's way more than I thought the iPhone would be... if it is the iPhone.
If it is then Apple will have pulled another 'miracle of modern technologies' off!
I think this is good thing!

I want the Newton BIC listed. I'd wager that gets a hefty price tag.

Yeah I called right before they closed also. The guy didn't have any solid knowledge of a shipment, but confirmed the 9am early open if they have ipad inventory.
I'll probably head over around 7:30... is that early enough?
It better not be raining!!!
I hope it is raining, it just means less people will show up probably. Snow would be great.

Hi, fairly new to the group.
I decided to change to apple affter borrowing my brothers Cube
ohhh now thats a classy looking thing.. :)
anyways, it just worked... after my frustration at windows crashing... for everything,
this just works!
so today ive ordered my first apple machine... and im wondering, have i made the right choice of mac for me?
i want it for graphic designing in photoshop, web design and the occasional audio recording using firewire...
I wanted a 17" powerbook for ages, but gave up on the idea as i though "do i really need to be that portable"
so then i though iMac? (knowing there was no way i could get a G5 AND screen - although ive been closly folowing the rumours beforehand...) but i figured that the 17" screen wasnt as big as the 17" i had been using on the Cube, it was just wider...
so i opted for the "Ultimate" G4 1gighz 1 gig ram eMac.
This has a bigger screen, still CRT flat (well basicly like the cube ive been using only with better specs and more ram)
i got this, airport extreem and also VPC 6 with win XP (i know ive gotta learn to let go) but anyways, ive herd that windows with VPC runs FASTER on a mac? is this true???
so what would you have gone for if you was me? did i make the right choice?

On my iBook I need to put the volume about halfway before I can hear anything. However it makes sense because I need to turn it down to about a quarter when using headphones - if it was louder without headphones then it would be unbearably loud with them. I hope that made sense!

using the bezel is actualy comfortable. though it seems like a solution built from trying not to touch the screen. i think it would look great on one of the imac/cinema stands, only much much smaller.

Another in the "too easy" series. iMovie this time!
We're trying to catch the evil cat.
Kinda choppy because I had to cut it down to ~30 seconds.
3 year olds are not good actors.

Well, this didn't really surprise me, seeing as how MS may have gotten their money's worth already by using the virtualization technology from Connectix in their Windows incarnations.
It was earlier said that MS Office and MS Messenger are the last 2 remaining applications that Microsoft is actively developing for the mac. I don't think Microsoft will drop these anytime soon as the former is a huge cash cow and the latter gives them a user base to compete with Yahoo! and AOL.

I like my desktop like I like my desk top - clean. I use Quicksilver and Spotlight religiously. Hotkeys are beautiful.
Menubar Applications:
- Quicksilver for application launching
- Dropbox for file project sharing
- iMOnTime for assignment and project reminders
- Caffeine to keep my screen awake
- Shion for controlling the lights in my room
- Facebook Notifications for...Facebook...notifications
- Screensharing Monitor (turned on temporarily, forgot to turn off)
