I have a PB Ti G4 (Model: M8592LL/A) with the original Airport card. I cant get this to connect to WPA networks. WEP wireless works fine.
When I have a network set as WPA the PowerBook sees the network and when I attempt to join it recognizes it as a "WPA Personal" network, however I cannot join the network at all.
Is there anything I can do for this? Do I have to buy an Airport Extreme card??

Hi all,
Here's a little back story about my setup, you can probably skip if you don't want to read it:
-----
I recently bought my first macbook pro, 13" 2011 model. I'm a windows developer so I needed to run windows on it, so what I did was put an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD in the optibay and installed windows on it, and cloned my OSX from the 5400RPM drive that comes with the macbook onto a new 500gb 7200RPM drive. So I have two separate drives for the two separate operating systems.
I had all sorts of trouble setting this up, because the 2011 MBP's don't boot from USB, I had to take my SSD out of the optibay and replace the DVD Drive, put the SSD in the main bay, install windows then swap it back.
-----
It mostly worked though, I could swap between the OS's using bootcamp, or reefit - both worked. However last week all of a sudden I just couldn't boot into windows, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. As this is my work PC, and my superdrive was at home, I couldn't boot from a windows disk to do a startup recovery. I wasted a day trying to workout how I could repair this from within OSX, mostly screwing around with vmware/parallels to try get it to run a repair from a windows disk to no avail. I went home, swapped the drives again, and ran the repair.
However now my boot camp won't work, I have to use reefit to open up windows when I want to boot. Occasionally it just won't boot from reefit at all either. I tried going into boot camp assistant but there is no way to repair the boot camp partition without wiping the drive, which is a pain.
On top of this, I've got a number of other problems:
- Windows on my SSD won't hibernate or sleep without crashing windows. Is this normal? is there a way to fix this?
- I now can't set it to boot into windows by default.
- On some networks (ie at uni) when I swap from mac to windows, it wont let me join the wifi network, I'm guessing this has to do with mac addresses and security? Has anyone else come across this issue?
- battery life is pretty average on both operating systems, more so on windows, is there any enhancements to windows other than what you would normally do on a laptop?
I really need to get a reliable system setup, I can't afford to go into work and have my laptop not boot into windows. Can anyone give me some advice? Should I try taking an image of windows and setting up the boot camp partitions again on the SSD? Or perhaps I need to just shell out for a 256gb SSD and put both windows and osx on that...

Recommending a particular mic for a singer is fraught with risk, as the human singing voice contains way too many variables to make this a simple choice. There is no guarantee a mic will be "the best" just because it's expensive or was used in some classic recordings. What's best for me probably won't be best for you, there's only one way to be sure and that's try a variety and see. Some find a cheap dynamic mic better for them than an expensive condenser.
If you're trying to avoid buying an audio interface by going usb, I wouldn't be heading straight for the top end of the market in microphones.

unsurprising really. Who can compete with apple? I'm not even sure there's space for microsoft even if they reposition themselves in the smartphone market

I'm not saying that this is what Apple will be doing, but for me, the whole point of resolution independance is to decouple font sizing from the sizing of lines and other graphics. Typically, people want to be able to make text larger, so that they can more easily read information. But they don't necessarily want all of the window borders to get thicker, or the icons to get larger, etc. So, simply zooming in on everything is not ideal. Plus, they don't want the font glyphs (lines that make up letters) to be scaled up, and made blocky, but rather to be precise and sharp, but bigger.
So, I can envision that there'd be two sliders to control things, one for the font sizing, and one for the other graphics primitives. Well, technically there's still the slider in the Finder for icon sizing as well. The sliders could cover any value range, continuously, and also have special spots. For example, there'd be the spot where one unit would be one pixel, and maybe even multiples of that. And on the font slider, there'd be the spot corresponding to "reality", where if you typed a letter in size 12 Times New Roman, and printed it out, and held that paper besides your screen, the letters on screen would be the same size as the letters on the paper, according to your eyes and a ruler.

Going from 2mb Ram to 4mb Ram is only $100. VERY much worth it in my opinion. The CPU upgrade is more debatable. And I'd go for 256gb on the SDD (128gb is a bit limited for today's standards if you plan on storing music and video).

didn't get a user manual!
If you bought a new or reconditioned machine, you would have received one. Failing that, you can download one from the Apple website.

MacRumors site design has been updated.
The new design preserves the basic feel of MacRumors but brings improved "standards" compliance and improved site navigation. Raw HTML file sizes should also be reduced.
Please report any errors or navigational difficulties to arn (http://forums.macrumors.com/member.php?action=getinfo&userid=1).
MacRumors' Forums will also see a major version upgrade in the future at which time the forum style will be brought into line with the new design.
A few things to note:
- Ad free 'contributors' section will be functional shortly.
- Permanent story links can now be found by clicking on the Article Titles.

Actually I think that all intel macbooks ( including pro) 's airport card is 802.11g and draft N... the problem is that they cant advertise it, because n is still in draft status at IEEE... so you can't really say hey this is an N... because N doesn't really exist as a satandard ( making a standard is a lenghty process takes about 5 to 6 years for the whole process...) if anyone has a draft n wifi router, please try and check the conection speed on you mactel macbook.. would be good to know if this is just a rumor, or if its really a fact.. i know i read it before buying my blackbook.. but alas.. i dont have a n draft router...
When the Airport Extreme came out it was before G was approved, they later flashed it up to the standard because it was close.
There are many Pre-N routers out there. All you have to say is 'Pre-N' and you're good to go.

I had been using my MBP all morning with no problems. I shut the screen and let it go into sleep mode for about an hour before I went back to get on it. At first I thought it just wasn't waking up from sleep mode, because the screen just stayed black but the fans booted up and I could hear it running. So, I shut the lid again, opened, and nothing.
Tried rebooting. The screen stays black the entire time, and I hear the faint sound of the start up sound. When I close the screen, the light at the front doesn't do the "breathing" that it does when in sleep mode. It just stays lit.
Does this sound like a display problem, or some other issue? Any ideas/suggestions?

I would take my iPod and Mac to the Apple store, but my warranty is out. It's been out for a long time too. And yes, I am using the Last.fm Scrobbler.
This is the likely source of your problem. The last.fm scrobbler doesn't deal particularly well larger libraries and larger capacity iPods. When you plug in your iPod the scrobbler will attempt to scrobble your plays from the iPod. While it does this, it completely freezes iTunes. If you open up Activity Monitor, you will see iTunes using 100% of your CPU resources on one of your cores. I have a 3 GHz MacPro and it freezes my iTunes for 2-5 minutes. iTunes is not multi-threaded, so it will only use one core/thread.
There is a temporary solution involving the deletion of one of the last.fm scrobbler logs. I'll see if I can find it. You could turn off iPod scrobbling, which will solve the problem. You may also want to try a different scrobbler. Unfortunately, it's probably an annoyance you'll have to live with if you want to scrobble.

Ok. Ok. The damn thing is a fake. How do I know, because an apple rep from the apple store came in the night of the Jaguar release and informed me that four former apple designers came up with the hoax. They built a plastic rendition using a computer and a laser cutter. They then superimposed the newton OS onto the face of the device. The person writing was writing on a the screen, but it was the newton doing all the work. The reason why it looks a little different is they just adjusted the colors and some of the icons to meet a more "OSX" look. Man..that sucks. I know... I know...I should have known, but damn.
Peace.
Peace.

It's not up to date, it has the latest firmware you can get without paying. Maybe Apple decided to stop selling 2.x and 3.x and that's why it thinks it's up to date. But you can still obtain the firmware from other places, a quick google should do it.
Thank You. In the process of trying to do that now!

I was quite impressed with Microsoft's idea of Photosynth (http://labs.live.com/photosynth/). Apparently it stitches user photo's together and gives a 3D view of a place. Of course a lot of things can be automated if the exact GPS coordinates are known. A GPS enabled camera could provide this and the combination of Google Earth could be just the thing Apple is looking for.

The version that Apple hosted on their website was pretty poor quality back in the day when bandwidth was low and a 28.8Kbps modem was the norm.
I've never come across anything approaching "high" quality. If anybody does, I'd love to know too.
I know the original Apple hosted video (just to show how bad it was) is on archive.org but I can't locate it right now

What I don't understand why is their so much news about 4.3.1, when everyone said stay away from it. Their is no 4.3 news anywhere. Is 4.3 not being jailbroken?
4.3 was jailbroken, but the jailbreak hasn't been released publicly. It's not known if 4.3.1 can be jailbroken, hence the warnings not to upgrade. Right now the hackers are trying to see if 4.3.1 can be jailbroken, hence all the talk is about that. If it turns out it can be jailbroken, then a JB will be released for 4.3.1, and we'll be told it's ok to upgrade. If not, a JB will be released for 4.3, and you'd be glad you didn't upgrade.

UITabBarItem's image cannot contain color (in fact, as the doc states, "The alpha values in the source image are used to create the unselected and selected images"). You may be able to hack in your own subviews or you'll have to roll your own tab bar.

its a shame there isnt a reseller/retail store here in charleston aka chucktown.... in the sea of retailers on king street, apple is nowhere to be found.
I cannot believe there isn't an Apple Store in Charleston (front and center, King Street). It'd do so good there, but oh well.
I guess now that Best Buy's have the mini-Apple stores, there won't be a reason to ever build a stand alone Apple store in Charleston (or Savannah, GA where I now live).
Everyone wants to be in the South except trendy retailers. Ah well.

Portal 2 on my 2010 with 5870 plays at 2560x1440 perfectly smoothly on the default graphics which, while not the highest in terms of AA, are very good indeed.
I also noticed that Portal 2 doesn't cause the fans to spin up as much as the old Portal did.
