Thank you guys, I'm running to best buy on lunch and grabbing one. I have another question, I have my airport extreme set to only allow the specific MAC addresses of the devices I'm using. Would I be able to continue to use this feature with a switch?

Someone in a nearby lab threw out their Power Mac 7200/90 because they were tired of it. Apparently it runs, don't know what OS is on it, I'll fire it up and check it out next week, but if anyone's in the Montreal area and you're interested in it, it's all yours. I'll keep it for a couple of weeks, then I'll be the one trashing it.

you could always focus your site on the powerpc aspect of macs, since that is your domain name, just an idea though

otherwise, its totally up to you, if you put a lot of effort into the site and everything it might end up being another great mac community, who knows

its up to you in the long run what you want to do with it though....just remember to have fun no matter what, otherwise it really isnt worth it if you ask me

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I just saw this (http://xlr8yourmac.com/archives/oct02/103002.html#S14660) article yesterday at XLR8yourmac.com

Info on Non-Pioneer Superdrive in recent iMac G4s (DVD-R/-RW plus DVD-RAM?) About a month or so ago I had heard that some new iMac G4s had non-Pioneer DVD-R/RW drives - a reader with one of these just sent an email with more info:

    " Hey Mike ...
Just wanted to let you know that Apple has changed the SuperDrive in the latest shipping iMacs. I just bought a 17" iMac LCD straight from Apple's Developer Connection (we're Select developers at work) and I was surprised to see that Mac OS 9.2.2's Apple System Profiler identified the drive as

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
    DVD-R/CD-RW
    Driver version: 1.4.8
    Mac OS partitions: 0
    Removable media: Yes
    Vendor: HL-DT-ST
    Revision Number: D02D
    Product ID: DVD-RW GCA-4020B
    Apple disc burning: Supported
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Depending on who you believe, "HL-DT-ST" is either Hitachi or GoldStar in Korea - I'm not sure which.

A few Google searches revealed that this drive does DVD-R, DVD-RW *and* DVD-RAM! And, supposedly, the CD-R burning speeds are 12x, which is apparently faster than the previous Pioneer SuperDrives. (I can't personally verify this myself, not knowing the specs of the Pioneer A03/A04)
    (Pioneer DVR-104/A04 and 103/A04 have a 8x/4x max (CDR/CDRW) burn speed rating.-Mike)
The only place I could find on the Mac Web that mentioned this new development is a 5-day old article on MacWelt.DE, the German Mac site.
    Regards,
    - Greg E"

About a dozen readers wrote in reply to this post mentioning LG or Hitachi links, etc. - another iMac G4 owner sent info from the label on the drive:

"FYI, I'll read off the label on a superdrive taken out of 17" iMac delivered approx. 3 weeks ago (yep, I've opened the iMac to take a closer look):

    HL Data Storage
    CD-RW / DVD-R/RW DRIVE
    MODEL No. GCA-4020B
    DRIVE REV. A1

    manufactured SEPTEMBER 2002
    Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc.
    (...), Tokyo, Japan
    MADE IN JAPAN

I tried to look up tech. specs of this GCA-4020B on the web, but got nowhere so far.
    Cheers,
    Jan"

I think this is what the CDMA iPhone is for and less likely VZW...

I think it's more likely it's for both, it would make no sense for Apple to develop a CDMA iPhone and not give it to Verizon. looking at this list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators) from wikipedia Verizon appears to be the largest CDMA carrier in the world.

You didn't mention your Cydia version; I will assume it is 1.0.3222-73. This is a long shot, but you might try installing the newer version of Cydia, 1.0.3366-1, to see if that helps. You can get it here:
    http://apt.saurik.com/debs/cydia_1.0.3366-1_iphoneos-arm.deb
You would need to use SSH to put this on your iPhone, somewhere like /var/stash. Then you would navigate to the .deb file in iFile, tap it and select Installer from the menu.
The problem with cracked apps, aside from the piracy aspect, is that you would never really know what you are getting.
By the way, that "essential upgrade" was like a month ago wasn't it? And your Cydia apparently was working for a while after that. Did you install that Icy app? I tried that and found it was making the AppStore act funny and I had to get rid of it. I never saw a problem with Cydia, but maybe because I never actually installed much of anything with Icy.

i actually downloaded it in safari download thing on my ipod and installed it in ifile and now it works!

    Hi,
This is my first post. I was wondering if anyone knows how to set the metronome in Logic Pro to only click during part of a recording. I would like it to click while recording up to a point and then continue recording but stop clicking. I have played around with the count-in feature and the pre-roll, but have not had much success achieving what I describe above. Thanks,
    -m

My iMac G5 is really starting to show its age. I can't decide if I want a 27" iMac or a 13" MacbookAir. I don't really need an optical drive. I use it to import CD's to iTunes. I can always do that on anther Mac and transfer the files later.

I worked for a couple of years in the cell phone industry for a company that acts as an intermediary between cell phone companies for various products. As part of my job, I had to deal with various escalations departments for all of the carriers and found that T-mobile actually had pretty good customer service. Maybe not the best but certainly not the worst.

Personally, I use T-mobile now and get a few more dropped calls than if I were using Verizon but they are also cheaper and have much nicer phones because they support GSM. I think that they are a solid choice if you live in top 100 markets but if not they just don't have the coverage. I really hope that they can expand their market to become competitive with Cingular and Verizon. Competition is always a good thing and I think that they would probably make a good partner for Apple.

Wait if you can. Should possibly see a refresh around the time the iMac gets updated. Since it's for next school year, you have time.

I'm tempted to get a MacBook Air to replace my MacBook Pro and then get my self a maxed out iMac for the heavy lifting. The iPad is 'too little' in the way of features, the MacBook Pro is an over kill in performance but the MacBook Air seems to be the nice middle road compromise that'll enable me to do some light work, internet stuff, the occasional bit of website editing (I use TextWrangler) and running Office 2011.

Then again I said that last time but ended up saying this I went for a MacBook Pro lol it will be interesting what the Air will have in the future given the move to Sandy Bridge might lead to a refresh in the future which will include the updated Sandy Bridge successor with a slightly improved integrated GPU.

As for others out there, I know many have gone for it over the MacBook and MacBook Pro - especially those who need portability over speed given the speed sacrifice is minuscule these days with the latest crop of CPU's available.

Absolutely, that is exactly what this is!

    Of course it isn't.

That said, a portable device that happens to include a mobile phone radio (and is presumably usable as a phone - that doesn't make it a phone any more than a car is a pick-up truck) would be a possibility.

    I'll accept that.

Something like the Nokia 770, but with GPRS/EDGE/UMTS in addition to 802.11. Yeah. I can go with that. Some of the supposed prototyped/patented designs kind look like a Nokia 770 too.

For the reasons I've outlined ad-nausium though, something that competes directly with what the bulk of Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, etc's, business strikes me as improbable.

But a pocketable gadget that successfully integrates various pieces of personal technology and wireless networking seems, well, it's the kind of thing Apple might call a mobile version of "me" ("me" being the user) wouldn't it? They could call it... Mobile Me...

    Now, who has that trademark?

ditto - am I the only one who isn't a fan/simply does't care for GPS units?

It's a technology with a LOT of potential once it's on a handheld device, especially when coupled with mobile Google maps. For example, you could do a quick search for the nearest Starbucks, nearest movie theater, etc., and get directions to go there (maybe even with a full navigation system like cars have).

The photo integration is definitely interesting, but by no means a "killer" app. The killer app for GPS is definitely providing local information and directions. I would definitely love to have that on my iPhone. The main thing I use the web browser on my phone for is precisely to look up movie times or try to look up directions when I'm in a pinch. If the iPhone provided a GPS-enabled Google Mobile application that made it much faster to get the information I'm now getting somewhat slowly and clumsily, that would definitely be something I would pay a little extra money for...

Does anyone have a facebook fan page set up for your photography? I never really considered setting one up before. Just figured the website would be sufficient, and email for receiving messages and etc. But, today, on a whim I went for it and set up an artist page. It's actually quite interesting, and a whole different experience from maintaining your normal photography site. Actually, since I'm in the beginning stages of a new site design, which will essentially be a restructuring from the ground up for how it is utilized, do you think it is best to leave the interaction side of things to facebook and let the website be more of a deep archive of the work, resume, etc?

If you're interested in checking out the fb artist page I set up, which actually includes in progress images of new work I'm putting together, it can be found at http://www.facebook.com/andybloxhamimagery

    Abstract
    Oct 24, 07:17 PM
    Finder:

    - Have an address bar so I can copy and paste file locations. Really useful to a developer, especially with working between the Finder and Terminal.

    - Have a way of seeing how much disk space directories and their children take up, both with number sizes and graphically.

    - Stop freaking putting every downloaded file in the bottom right of my Desktop, on top of the last downloaded file. Put the icon anywhere else on the free half of my Desktop.

    - If I empty the trash, I expect to see that volume's space taken or available value update right away for its icon, on the Desktop.

    - Tabbed Finder windows?

And what about all the really simple things. Like if I select a bunch of files (eg: 8 photos), I want to be able to see the size (in Bytes) of the 8 photos I selected. Right now, Finder tells me that I have selected 8 files, but also tells me the total HD space remaining rather than the size of the 8 files.

Just some very simple things, Apple. PathFinder works so much better than Finder. Too bad it was so much slower than Finder.

I have noticed that my iPhoto took up nearly half of my 640GB HD, I had 24K pictures. I did some house cleaning and removed lots of albums to folders on the HD and removed the pictures from iPhoto. After cutting out 18K pictures reducing the library to only 6K, iPhoto still took 220GB, my masters were only 56GB.

I found there was a folder with over 158GB, full of tens of thousands of photos, even ones deleted years ago.

I am now using Aperture 3, thanks :apple: for the good price. I now import folders and keep all my folders organized into separate folders by title. I hated the way iPhotos organized.

it is good to recover so much of my HD back.

I have now taken charge of my images and videos, importing separately, rather than using Aperture or iPhoto, then organizing them, then importing them into Aperture or iMove when I need too.
