I second setting up a local DNS, you could use BIND on an existing mac or recycle an old PC and install BIND on linux, use os x server, etc.
Other things to consider, if your hosts are obtaining IP addresses via DHCP you'll have to configure your DHCP server to assign the local DNS server IP address, right now it's probably assigning the IP address of your router/gateway you'll also need to set the search domain for your hosts so you don't have to type full domain names everytime.
If hosts have static IPs don't forget to manually set the DNS server IP and search domain.
On your DNS server, just set the forwarder IP address to what the DNS IPs are in your current router configuration, your ISPs DNS or you could just use OpenDNS servers which is what I usually do if I set up a local DNS server.
Did a quick search on the web and found this: http://www.macshadows.com/kb/index.php?title=How_To:_Enable_BIND_-_Mac_OS_X's_Built-in_DNS_Server ... could be useful. If you browse around enough you could find a way to do it on an existing Mac w/o installing server OS.

Hi all,
My first post on this site and already I am on the want..
I'm looking to upgrade the HDD of my Mini, current specs below.
I would like to take it up to 1.5TB or 2TB. It is something that is in my sphere of capability so not so worried about the actual doing of it.
Can anyone recommend a HDD that would be suitable and would fit?
Thanks,
Gledders

Now that VPN does not work directly from the iPad, Instead of jail breaking your device and hacking on some illegal source (which they can make some validation code later that you cannot hack in yourself). Why not connect to a vpn'd tether (iphone / android device). Essentially it is the same thing but the IOS api cannot account for if the device being connected through vpn.
I thought of that but have not had the chance to test yet.

We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.
that is a great statement from Jobs, can't wait to see what turns out besides osx lion & ios 5.
hardware wise, imac & macbook need upgrades. and since mbp was released in feb, perhaps a new one will be out by christmas , being 10 months ( max time ever between cycles) if not i bet the all new design, blade ssd, new enclosure and Ivy Bridge will debut in jan. whatever happens, apple has a lot in store

This is awesome. Hopefully quality control is still great after this move.
That's what I'm worries about too, but hopefully everything will work out fine.

Ah, I didn't realize that using the mute switch would give different results than muting with volume control. (It really shouldn't; the fact that apps can ignore the volume being all the way down is ridiculous.)
This also means I can't lock rotation and mute at the same time? Hmmmmm, when do I need to lock rotation.... When I'm lying in bed. When do I want to mute.... Gee, also when I'm lying in bed so I don't wake up my husband!
This is the most nonsensical settings configuration possible, wtf?
Thanks for your help, though.

Just wondering if anyone can help with a recommendation for a scanner. I want to scan in my old lecture notes I have from university. They've been gathering dust under my bed and generally taking up space for years. It would be handy if I could transfer these notes to my Mac.
I'm looking for a scanner that comes in at under 200 (willing to go slightly higher if needed, although lower would be preferred). I'm unlikely to ever scan in any photos, umm ever! So my need is for this scanner to be always used to scan in documents that are txt based.
Thanks for reading and hope someone can help
Jason
P.s I have a 12 Rev A Al book, so no usb2. But I should be upgrading in the near future. Not sure if this is relevant

In glen cove, long island, so iPad would have to be re synced on their comp?
I think I'd have to enter my password for the app on his computer to synch it. Then sign out.

Not everyone wants to have to click through an obscure link just to see what the OP was talking about.
So instead, you download the image and re-post without link attribution? And rather than even taking the time to even *look* at the link itself - which would have taken 0.5 seconds - you simply mindlessly duplicated it and pretended you had a new idea?

I don't have anything to add but my thanks *I'm planning to buy an Airport Extreme soon to replace the total heap of **** that is the Netgear router provided to me by Virgin Media. I wanted to add a USB drive for Time Machine backups and network storage that had a low power consumption and was quiet, and it seems I didn't even need to start a thread to ask for advice *everything's already been answered in this topic! :)

All modern sound cards are good enough (read, perfect) for anyone that does not have a professional DJ set up, ten thousand dollar speakers, or something of that sort.
In that case, they'd probably use an external sound device via USB, but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure the Mini and iMac both use Intel High-Definition Audio cards, which support digital output.
You can also adjust the Equalizer in iTunes if you're not happy with the bass, treble, or frequency ranges when playing music.

Microsoft has announced that it has halted development on a universal version of VirtualPC.
VirtualPC has long-been the king of the hill for Virtualization on Macintosh. With the Intel transition, however, came competitive pressure from Parallels (http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/), which has since released the final version of its product, and VMWare which is showcasing a beta (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060805151513.shtml) of its solution at WWDC.
Microsoft has claimed that to port VirtualPC to Intel would be much like making VirtualPC 1.0 all over again.
Digg This (http://digg.com/apple/Microsoft_Officially_Kills_Virtual_PC)
As a Powerbook G4 User, VPC was all of unusable, really slow. I know that it has (had ?) to emulate an entire Hardware platform, but knowing how much bloatware M$ produce, I am sure it could have been a hell of a lot faster if it was coded better. I know that M$ purchased this software from Connectix, but successive versions gained features and lost speed !

Nice -- i think this MBP 1,1 in question was bought used (through macofalltrades) but was once under applecare as well. I think that might tip the scales in his favor a bit as well.

Hi,
New Mac user (os x 10.6). The transition from pc to mac has been interesting. Sometimes limiting but I am getting there.
One thing I haven't found in the forums and dont really know what to type into google to search for is....
With mac mail, if i try and add an email to the TO:, CC:, BCC: instead of just typing the name of the person in the address book. I have to type the email address. Once I type the first few letters of the email address, it has a drop down with options to choose from.
For example.
If I had a friend called Joe Smith and his email was something completely random like car_man@cars.com, I can't just type Joe and the address book will drop down options for Joe. I have to remember his random email address and type CAR and then it will give me all the emails that have car in it.
Can this be changed so I type their names?

I would really love to see the numbers on that boondogle.
They got their value out of Connectix in Virtual Server. Like it or not the Mac stuff was just the tip of the iceberg.
After reading the Wiki article I linked to I am also not sure how much of Connectix was bought by MS.

so does anyone here believe that this is all we are getting in leopard? i just dont see anymore top secret features coming out unless apple hasnt released them in the builds they seeded. i just want overall system speed to be improved and i'll be happy.
I think Finder will be completely overhauled, but that's just speculation.
As for how long can Apple wait before spilling the beans in it's dev builds, I don't know. Good question.
