Well said Snowy_River.
Very good point about tools. If two tools are suitable for a given job, then a "pro" will choose the lower cost tool. That is why the pro is in business.
I had forgotten that Word is bundled with MS Works, so of course it must by implication be a consumer application.
For what it's worth, I am just wrapping up a 2000+ page text/spreadsheet/template toolkit that includes 400+ pages of pdfs - all created using Pages. The longest pdf is around 90 pages, including a ToC.

I hope this is true. A lot of people would go to T-Mobile because of their competitive pricing and that would encourage AT&T and Verizon to lower their prices too. Hell, I would consider switching.

Facts? You have no proof that she was faking a seizure- none whatsoever. If you want to talk facts, then speak about what you actually know. You have NO WAY to prove she was faking. What you're engaging in is speculation.
I actually know that many here have shared the same view as mine, that It's painfully obvious she wasn't having a seizure. Must of been a coincidence the seizure happened right at door exit then? Purposely done to avoid being taken outside, where she would of been in severe trouble.
Common sense always prevails.

Ideally, I would have liked to have seen him in front of the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. That would have been a victory to be proud of.

But there is no such thing as a 'smartphone OS' for iOS. The OS runs across three devices (four if you include AppleTV). Just like there's no laptop OS for Windows or Mac OS X.
Of course there is. iOS runs on two currently available Apple smartphone models: 3GS and 4. The iOS that runs on these phones is sufficiently different in feature sets from the iOS that runs on Tablets, media consumption devices, and Apple TVs:
-Larger resolution on tablets
-Communications handled separately - No phone app or visual voicemail on Tablet or iPod Touch
-No installable apps on Apple TV
I think you already understand the differences. You just would like to lump everything together so that it seems that Apple still has dominant marketshare.
Pretty disingenuous use of statistics, if you ask me..

well there are two market share stats that are at issue here. one is hardware sales, and one is OS X usage.
i.e. I have a mac mini, but it doesn't have X on it. It runs solely windows 2003 server with a couple of virtual servers on it also running windows 2003. It's dead quiet so i can run it in my room 24/7. so it's a hardware sale, but not using X.
I built a macbook for a client running XP only since that's what is required for work. i think more and more we will see apple hardware being bought for use with windows -- people who like the aesthetics but prefer to continue to use their current software library and/or have work restrictions.

Ever since the iPhone came out I've said that it will eventually replace the iPod. That day may be coming sooner than we guessed.
Someday the iPhone will be just like the iPad. There's no 'iPod Touch,' just an 'iPhone' that you buy with or without a 3G or 4G chip. And it's up to you if you want to buy service to go along with it or not. (They could still call it the 'iPhone.' The chip-less one would come with a booklet telling you about Skype and Viber and other wifi phone services.)
Such a device would naturally go on sale before the holiday season, so maybe we're close to that happening. I don't think it'll be this year, but maybe they're getting us ready for the year when it does happen.
Does it really have to be one or the other, why can't both products exist happily.
Look the iPhone and iPod Touch are almost the same thing, and when the iPhone was introduced it was described as the best iPod ever. With that in mind it makes sense for them to be released at the same time. As for the other iPods they do exactly what you expect from a music player, they play music. Oh and they are still selling tones of them!

To be honest, I've had more application crashes and restarts on OSX than I have under XP/Windows in the past 3 years. So much for "crash resistant" - and yes, I've had 4 kernel panics since I got this iMac home; that's more than the number of BSODs I've had under XP in 4 years.
Which means -- as everyone is saying -- that there is something wrong with your computer. I have a MacBook, two Intel iMacs, and a Mac Pro in my house, and they do not crash despite heavy daily use. My poor Mac Pro is running three different operating systems right now using Parallels, with nary a complaint. If you are getting unexplained kernel panics on a clean install of Mac OS X, then you have a hardware problem.
Hardware problems can affect any OS -- I've seen Windows systems that get daily BSODs. It's not because "Windows sucks", it's because there was a sub-par memory chip or somesuch in the system. Likewise Mac OS X crashes, when nobody else is experiencing a problem, are not an indication of the stability of the OS but rather of your hardware.
You're quoting me back to me when all of us (including me) were talking about that other guy that is having hardware problems because his Parallels "sucks." Parallels kicks ass on my C2D 20" iMac - hence the reason I piped up to be the first to say something is wrong with the other guy's machine if he can't get it working right.
On mine, which is stock hardware except for the 2GB of RAM I have in it, Parallels starts up in 4 seconds, boots my XP VM in 9-10, shuts down in 3-4, restarts the same VM in under 5 seconds (have yet to figure that one out, probably because of caching someplace; I don't even see the XP splash screen when it reboots/restarts because it's so fast), suspends in 22-25 seconds, resumes in 30-34, and I have no issues with any hardware at all in my XP VM. I even burn CDs and DVDs from the XP VM over FireWire/USB without hassles (Plextor FireWire/USB external).
So, on a similarly configured piece of hardware, if he's having suspend/resume times that seem to be 4-6x longer than others then, as you said, there is something wrong with the hardware. If none of the rest of us are having said issues, your line of logic would follow and apply to his machine since he's the only one reporting such ridiculously long suspend/resume times among other things.
Parallels works for me. Since I can't post specific benchmark data for Parallels and that other new-on-the-scene virtualization software for Macs <hint, hint> I'll just say this:
I completed the testing I said I was going to do, and Parallels simply lays the smackdown across that other software. And yes I'm well aware that other software is in beta - or pre-beta late alpha as one person put it - and that's fine. But I paid for Parallels, and to use that most famous line about Macs:
It just works.
Oh yeah, it beats that other software even with multi-core CPU support enabled. Go figure.
bb
Parallels sucks but until now its been the only REAL game in town.
Ah... the clarion call of lamers. Might as well bash Windows since it's so pervasive while you're at it. And it's still no excuse for stealing the software and breaking the faith. Bleh...

OMG....I would NEVER take information as fact from an "ATT customer service agent". I have received so much wrong info or even been dare I say lied to, I would never trust what a random ATT rep said.
Not to mention, the service reps are so far down the chain of command, they would not have info on when the next iphone is being released.
Yes, once I called AT&T to get information on my partner discount. I called three times and got three different answers. I called about which data plans could be used with my Treo 680 -- I called three times and got three different answers. The moral of the story is: If you don't like what the AT&T rep says just keep calling back until you get the answer you want.
pfft, this should not be front page news, hell not even second page... just a bunch of hearsay from a CR that knows nothing about it and speculates BS.
Certainly not news-worthy. Hardly a credible source.
A real live AT&T customer care rep! Well that is as official as it gets. Everyone knows that Apple always informs carrier customer care reps of their future plans months in advance...
Oh Wait. I heard from the Cinnabon guy that the US Government called him and officially informed him that Osama Bin Laden is still alive and being held in a secret chamber below Disney World or Disney Land.
I heard the same thing about Osama Bin Laden from the guy behind the counter at my corner mini-mart. He just got off the phone with the President when I walked up to the counter. Normally I would not believe him, but he stated it as a matter of fact, so I knew it was true.
Even if Apple and Google both make money from ads and apps... Apple still gets $600 per phone.
Apple has the right idea :D
"Android" can have their marketshare... I don't think it bothers Apple in the least.
Steve Jobs cares about market share for one reason. He knows that the young Google founders whom he was helping and mentoring stole some of his company's best ideas and are now helping his competitors to take the market share that he intended to consume. It always sucks when somebody steals from you and then uses it against you -- especially when its the folks you consider your partners or allies. I'm sure there is more to the story, but I am pretty sure that's how Steve Jobs views it.
I do agree, however, that the smartphone market growth we are seeing with Android is primarily made up of folks who are not interested in having a smartphone but are just picking up the best free or ultra-cheap phone. These phones are typically running a generation-old version of the Android OS and the folks who purchase them are really only interested in their phone ringing when a call comes in (i.e.: if they won't pay for a phone, then they won't pay for an app, and therefore are not tied-to the Android ecosystem).
Also, the PC vs Mac war that Apple has supposedly "lost" has left them being the most profitable PC maker in the world (just counting Mac sales). That's pretty amazing considering they are not #1 on revenue or units sold, but they still make more profit than the folks selling commoditized PCs. Not a bad "consolation prize" for "losing" the PC war. Note that as the PC market is declining, Macs are still showing phenomenal gains.
Secondly, let's not ignore that Apple is still the mobile OS leader worldwide when you count iPod Touch and iPad. Their current dominance with iPad is overwhelming and those buyers are not getting a free or BOGO offer like the folks picking up Android smartphones. Those folks are going to buy apps and buy-in to the iOS ecosystem.
Finally, the smartphone market will very likely not play out like the PC market. Greg Cox wrote a very good piece (http://expletiveinserted.com/2011/04/30/the-emperors-new-network-effects/) on the differences on his blog.
As a consumer I am both grateful and weary of the competition. Having a dominant Apple would help put pressure on the publishing companies and Hollywood (I hate publishing and movie industry folks trying to get me to pay for the same content over and over again). At the same time competition keeps Apple from doing as much "planned obsolescence". Competition tends to accelerate development in that it gives you somebody to set pace with and hence we probably get one or two extra features out of every iPhone release and iOS update. I don't think competition drives Apple the way it drives others though. Apple tends to have a proactive plan for the future of their devices that they probably make minor deviations from based on competition. Whether their plan is good (iPhone, iPad), lack-luster (MobileMe) or bad (Ping), they tend to stick to it.
Personally, I wish Microsoft's mobile OS or Web OS was doing better than Android though. I say this because Google does not care about producing a great mobile OS so much as disrupting the market, generating a large footprint, and getting a platform whereby they can deliver ads to users. For Google, Android is a means to an end. MS and HP care more about the quality of the OS experience since the software is their actual product and they are the ones dealing with the customer support issues. Google has a reputation for leaving things unfinished and forgetting about them and not providing direct support.

That's what makes all the rancor about this so funny. Depending on the reading of this EULA provision, Apple's limits are still as, or more, restrictive than Microsoft's.
But at least they are clear. And, last time I checked OS X wasn't far of the 99$ mark for a 5 instance home license. Compare that with Micro$oft:p :p

Any have a guess guess what this might mean for the 11"? Will that have to be even more of a compromise? I'm worried the C2D/320M might be a better option for me if Apple go for Sandy Bridge and have to cut even more corners on the 11" due to even harsher space/energy drain constraints.
If the CPU option for an 11" bump is only a marginal performance increase (*if* Apple choose to bump this summer), the nVidia GPU seems too good to lose.
I can't/don't need to buy right now but it seems I might be good off planning it a bit.
As for the gaming comments, give it up already. Personally, I want *one* (1) computer and I want to to be as portable as possible. That means both work and entertainment, some of that being the occasional game. And I realize it'll be a compromise. I won't buy it for the sake of gaming but why should that stop me from trying a few of them out?
There are a lot of games out there, some being more playable than others on an MBA. Don't expect everyone to "need"/want max detail at native resolution @60fps. I'm fine with fps dips and low/med details. If it plays it plays. It's as if the MBA could only ever do monochrome text games. Can we stop seeing the world in an "either it'll be the best ***** ever, or it'll blow chunks" kind of way? Things are bit more nuanced than that.
I'm wondering if we are underestimating hardware nowadays. To me it looks pretty nice, *especially* at the "low" end.

Personally I could care less about the graphics downgrade if the MBA gets sandy bridge. It is slightly disappointing at face value to downgrade anywhere with a new generation of machine, but I can live with not being able to do any gaming on this thing if it is excellent at everything else. i5 or i7 CPU combined with 512 GB of storage would be frickin' amazing. Throw in an anti-glare display and a backlit keyboard and I would just about roll over and die.
