This would be stealing, as my contract obliges me to continue paying for the cost of the hardware, which really isn't paid for, when I first get the phone. I agree with the others however, that AT&T should unlock the phone, once the contract is up, or that Apple should offer an unlocked phone, albeit at a higher price. I am thinking of expat pilots who live in the UAE flying for an international carrier for 20 days and then get to come back stateside for 10. They really need a solution like that. The next thing that AT&T should do, then, is have a different pricing structure for those with legitimately unlocked phones. After all, that phone didn't cost AT&T a dime.
In what way could you possibly define this as stealing? As you say, your contract is what obligates you to continue paying. Having an unlocked iPhone doesn't magically make your contract disappear. You still have to keep paying AT&T. It does allow you to use your personal property to do business with another carrier, if you choose, but you will still be paying AT&T. The fact that the lock is only in place to keep you from doing business, using your personal property, with another carrier, would be called restraint of trade in any other industry and would itself be illegal. Why is it legal in the wireless industry?

I am selling my Philips Portable DVD player. It has never been used and it's box has never been opened. I bought it because of it's impressive feature set. The fancy features for this model are:
Swivelyy Screen (useful if you don't want to have to keep it on your lap)
Built in iPod dock (the ipod sits flush inside the DVD player and allows you to watch movies stored on your iPod)
Dual headphone ports (so a friend can also listen to the movie)
Remote control
FREE CAR ADAPTOR (sorry I like the Caps lock)
Dolby Digital sound
Extra Bright Display
Built in high quality stereo speakers
SD card slot (use as digital picture frame/viewer)
LIGHTWEIGHT (sorry Caps lock again)

This is the cheapest weighted keyboard that I know of.
I bought this keyboard for the sound booths at our college and I've been really happy with it. It's obviously not a full keyboard, but it's got enough to make it really useful and it also works seamless with Macs, truly plug-and-play. Logic has no trouble recognizing it.
As for speakers, I got the Bose Companion and have been very happy with it. It's not cheap ($300) but IMO it's worth every penny.

Hi,
Ok, i know this site is by it's nature about gadgets, but for me it's all about the carrier.
I've had 8 different carriers in the last 10 years. Many of them have merged/
changed names/gone out of business.
When i see people complaining about their carrier, it's always about coverage
dropouts. Folks, ALL carriers will have SOME dropouts, especially if you live
in a challenging physical terrain.
What i found more aggravating is how obtuse and unresponsive these companies are. This is an area of modern commerce that is barely regulated.
Politicians have been lobbied to allow a wild west mentality for an industry
that has insinuated itself into most of our lives in just a short time.
I've had carriers routinely sneak in extra charges. Representatives have no
compunction about lying. I don't know about you, but i don't have time to
audit my bill every month with a magnifying glass.
Each carrier was worse than the last. The most annoying thing? Being
put on hold for 40 minutes, than disconnected. This is intentional. They don't want to be accessible.
Finally the last time i switched i did a search to see which companies had the least complaints. Although the billing practices overall in the industry
are atrocious, i've had the best experience overall with my current carrier.
This trumps any pleasure i would get from having a phone that integrates
well with my macs.
The only thing worse than crappy cell phone companies would be someone that thinks the government could make it better. What motivation does the govt have to make cell phone compainies better? Votes. That's it. Votes. The only motivation that government has. So they'll promise you that they'll make it better. You'll vote for them. They'll spend money regulating whatever you think needs regulating. They'll create a branch that costs some upzillion dollars. Cell phone companies will be forced to comply with some ridiculous something or other. They'll up your bill by placing a charge on it called the "rsoo tax" to pay for it. The cell phone companies will all still treat you badly. Vote with your feet. Keep switching carriers. Don't blow your cash on idiotic features for idiotic prices. The companies will comply and compete for your business.

well what is the best quality I can get from a rip? Ive got like 256kbps 128 320 its all over the place
Uncompressed is the best, but if you don't have the storage capacity, AAC is quite good with 192Kbit/s, although I prefer 256Kbit/s and 320Kbit/s.

I might actually go to the 2100 best buy because of points and I can put it on my card. Hopefully they will have it in white! I don't think I can camp out, so I will be there in the morning to see how the line goes.
I wonder if other retailers like Best Buy or Wal-Mart will start selling them early or at normal time instead of 5:00 PM?

It's not that the MacBook Air is evolving into a mainstream product. It's the mainstream that's evolving into MacBook Air-like products.
Hit it on the head there sir!
I was giving serious consideration to getting a pimped up 15 inch MBP as a full on replacement for my 4 year old iMac and be mac portable. But thinking about it do I really need that level of power and lug around that much weight when I can buy the cheaper pimped out 11 inch MBA to use in conjunction with my existing iMac.
I'm REALLY taken by the form factor of the 11 inch. Instant on and just sling it in my backpack and go. Want to wait to see if sandy bridge turns up soon in one.

It's theft disguised as charity...
It's not theft. He's reverse engineered the DRM and is now offering a Fairplay compatible alternative DRM to companies. You may as well say that Apple "stole" Adobe's PDF format when they reverse engineered it into OSX.

if your talking about accidental dialing try AskToCall makes you confirm dialing
AskToCall is a nice tweak, really stops the 'pocket dialing' for me. I used it for about a week....but removed it yesterday.
I was thinking it was causing some battery usage and/or sluggishness issues and was removing apps one by one to see which may have been the culprit.
I'll be re-installing it....but thinking about re-installing iOS 4.1 first (on iOS 4.3.2 now, which is probably the issue in the first place).

Anyone know what the button 914 on the top right of the "vPod" screen is meant to signify in Figure 17? Could it be WiFi signal strength?

Hi again :)
Now I'm looking for some cases for my iPhones (3GS and 4), and I was thinking to buy these cases (Feather cases by Incipio):
http://www.myincipio.com/iPhone-4-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-iPhone-4-feather-Ultralight-Hard-Shell-Case.asp
http://www.myincipio.com/iPhone-3G-3GS-Cases-Accessories/Incipio-iPhone-3G-3GS-feather-Ultralight-Hard-Shell-Case.asp
But I'd like to know if these cases are really good.
I've been searching through other pages but Incipio is one of the pages who takes less for shipping them + 3GS case has 50% of discount.
Also I was thinking about buying Zagg's screen protectors for 3GS and 4.
Is this a good deal?
Thanks in advance ;)

If you've see the keynote stream, then you'll of come across the part where Steve asked some of his employees (marketing, engineer etc..) to stand up and receive a round of applause.
I thought this was quite a nice gesture and it's the first time I have seen this from them.
Good things!! :claps:
I think he does that in just about every keynote. Still a nice thing to do though :)

Ummm...entertain me. Why do you think they're a rip off? (Keep in mind that "big" is a relative term. What do you consider a "big screen" TV? Thirty-two inches and up?)
-Squire
Spending above £1000 on a tv which might be 'HD ready', and then finding out that the large majority of stuff on tv looks crap on it, because the content isn't in HD, to my mind makes it a rip off. I'm not sure how entertaining that answer is. 36 inch and above on a tv is is what I call a big screen.
My 'normal' bog standard, run of the mill, crt (remember those) tv still makes tv look good, dvd's look better, and cost less than an arm or a leg on the black market organ exchange.

The real deal on resolution independance, is that instead of the UI being made up of images, PDFs I believe, it will be drawn using vectors. so a OS can scale anything to any size, and it will never become pixalized, because it's being drawn fresh using math instead of images.
Quite simply: No. Resolution independance has nothing to do with vectors. Images in Leopard such as icons will continue to be bitmaps. Its how those vectors are scaled which is the important thing.
Note that you can already change the DPI scaling of your apps in Tiger using Quartz debug, if you want to get a preview of how resolution independance works.
