Hardly. They should pay more because they owe more.
Oh I completely agree. I assumed that owing more was implicit with my welfare comparison.
I think how much one should pay in taxes should be two pronged; one prong determines how much net benefit you gain from the government, and the other determines how capable you are of paying towards that received benefit.
In the case of most low-income welfare beneficiaries, they simply are not able to pay back what they receive in benefits (hence why we don't expect them to). On the other hand, we also don't ask wealthier individuals who receive very vast benefits to pay towards those benefits to any meaningful degree, even though they are capable.
Apparently being selfish and myopic is patriotic.

Oh, and 5P has left the building, for an undermined amount of time. ;)
I read a post somewhere that said 5P had left us.
Is that true? That would be so sad. :(
As someone once said, "He may be a bastard, but he's our bastard."
Probably 3 days, if my experience is to be trusted. ;)

Nice link. Thanks. ;)
At my last job, we had a contract with Cingular. After seeing how they treated a client that spent almost $200k a year with them, I'd never use them. It was horrid. I can't imagine how they would treat someone who spent $1200 or less.
I've had Nextel since 2000, and I loved it. Note the keyword there? Loved.
I had Sprint before that, and finally got so fed up with not only their service, but their customer service as well. Made the switch, and was very pleased until a year ago. When they announced the merger, I almost threw up. Since they actually merged, it's been the same crap that I dealt with when I had Sprint. Screwed up billing, ungodly terrible support and customer service, you name it.
It's sad, but when I call them I can tell right off the bat if the person I'm speaking with was a Nextel employee or an original sprint employee. Yeah, it's that bad.
Prior to the merge, 495 of the Fortune 500 companies had Nextel. I wonder how many of them still do?
The only thing keeping me on it right now is free incoming calls. Since U.S Cellular has recently added this feature, I'm very tempted to switch. The only thing stopping me so far is I'm waiting to average up my mobile to mobile minutes. If they are doable without doubling my current bill, I'm all over it.
What does really interest me is if Apple would indeed end up providing access to mobile broadband in their line-up. That would be very, very nice to have since all the cards out there are for PC's with some flavor windows.
As for the whole iTunes integration, I'm with you on this. Carrier first, then the goodies.

My roommate is a PC fanatic. He's an engineer, yet he still uses IE instead of Firefox for crying out loud. All of his purchased music is from MusicMatch, and he plays it on the cheapest player he could find.
He recently got a new computer and tried to get his MusicMatch songs to play on it. He has now devoted a couple hours every afternoon for 3 weeks to the project. In his weakened condition, I started showing him how my iTunes music could painlessly hop from computer to computer, and how if he used iTunes, he could stream all of my non-protected music. He was ready to cut his losses and switch to iTunes right there.
Unfortunately, iTunes songs won't play on his player so that was the end of it. There's no way he's paying more than $30 for a player, and there's no iPod that cheap. As a result, he'll never know how much better iTunes (and the rest of mac software) is. Apple had a chance to get their foot in the door, and instead they slammed his own door in his face.
The Shuffle is $79 and will not cost $30 anytime soon, so I guess he's lost anyway.
This was an example when the price of the hardware was limiting, not the iTS incompatibility.

I think Linux might have a higher install base than Mac....
I always laugh at these charts... it's like comparing the install base of Bentley to the install base of Toyota. Doesn't exactly tell the story, does it?

Where's Hingham? I got to BU for school and currently live in brookline. Is this closer than the apple store in the Cambridge Galleria? I'm not sure if I'll be buying Leopard or just waiting till next week before I order a new MackBook Pro that ships with it.
Galleria is Closer to you. You might just want to go to the apple store there, b/c if u buy a new mac, they'll have the dvd inside the box that day.

I think there's a huge market for this. Anyone who is into taking pictures would enjoy this.
There's a website (or used to be anyway) that was being developed before Google came into the picture that integrated pictures using GPS data onto a map of the US. I can't remember the name of it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

well i was more thinking about hip hop/rap in my own language and in german it's sounds like hypocrisy singing about ghetto and the whole gangsta thing .. most are simply copying US ones
(i didn't knew a single rapper you mentioned, not interested that much, after all i'm more the rock'n'roll guy so you would need a lot of cars to drag me into hiphop-school)
about age: try finding lots of (male) hiphop fans older than 20 over here... they are the exception and not the rule.. for me hiphop is still teenager music stuff simply because of the people who like it over here .. if you don't grew up with it you won't like it later
Unfortunately I know nothing of Rap in Germany, but I'm curious, could you suggest any that rhyme in English?
Age is just number, always remember that. Maturity is something else. I'm fairly mature, but I still enjoy Rap (its only old-school) & Hip-Hop (yet I'm very selective lately). However I enjoy ALL forms of music; except Country just cant get with it, save for the Gambler because of a movie. I love RockNRoll (U2,Bon Jovi, Metallica, Kiss, getting into Led Zeplin - The lemon song!).
Rap is still a very young form of music; not a sub-genre of anything else (Rock has Heavy Metal, Soft/Hard Rock, Grunge, etc). Rap only really much has one sub-genre = HipHop.

Hey all,
Just recently purchased a 15 gig iPod, and noticed that in the instructions it says that the computer needs to not be asleep for the iPod to charge. I own a powerbook 12" and when I have my computer asleep and iPod connected the iPod appears to actually charge. My question is, is the iPod actually charging at the same rate as it would if the computer was awake? Is it charging at all? And does the AC adapter charge at a higher/faster rate than through firewire, is it better to charge from AC when possible?
Thanks :)

5K are refurbs. Ive had 4 5Ks now and they have been pretty bad. The first 2 digits of the serial start with 5K.
Yes, Apple will replace it, trust me. I have gotten mine replaced 3 times for yellow tint on the screen. Call the Apple store first, and talk to them.
Just go in there and tell them that it gets worse while watching movies, or in low light rooms, and they will def replace it.
Edit-I'm not saying to lie, but from my experiences with light bleeding, they DO get worse in low light rooms or when the phone gets hotter from watching videos, ect.
Yea, I do notice it getting worse under low light conditions. I'll call them ask beforehand though. Thanks for the help!

I can see how it might be useful, but at the same time, it clutters everything up (especially mission control) and makes it difficult to find the document I'm working on.
Make sure to file a feedback/report on your complaint. I think you are right and it may not make sense to show so much. Maybe a much smaller subset.

No, I'm pretty sure Apple canceled the Zune. :D
Or you could say Nokia...
The Zune will just live on in Windows Mobile Phones and Nokia will be leading the front.
Zunes with phone capabilities...

Well then I would definitely say these 2 I found are both reproductions of some sort since they both have a copyright on them. I kind of figured that was going to be true as it seemed uncharacteristic of apple to mess up a piece of art with a copyright line. So they definitely are not worth the $80 and $60 they are asking for them. Maybe if I can get them down to $10 or something I might buy them. Thanks for your help and input.

Actually, I've read the same about "DVD Jon". Apparently he stole most of the code for DeCSS anyway, and the part he wrote was pretty pitiful. I've read some of his forum posts and he certainly doesn't sound like an intelligent guy. He might have had somebody else do the reverse engineering and just put his name on it so that the media would run a story along the lines of "Guy who cracked DVD encryption crack's iTunes encryption also!"
To followup on my own post, that was very close to the headline which CNN QuickNews sent me only a few hours later. I doubt DVD Jon had much to do with this at all. It's just branding.
