I'm more just curious if there has been evidence that the typical response of "we only store them for a few days while we ensure delivery" is not always true. In a lot of crime investigations, it looks like the police look at the text messages stored on the phone itself.

At least in this case, they got the data from the operator as they clearly said it. IIRC they got about a month worth of texts because they said there was something like 500 SMSs between the suspect and the victim. And yes, in this case the actual content of the SMS was stored as well, not just the date and number.

Again, this is Finland, not US, but I would still say they store them for more than a few days.

The reason MacBU has had to abandon VBA is that the Mac compiler won't work on Intel Macs. And Microsoft has already announced that VBA is being deprecated on Windows (it will go on working for a few years, then will end). So there's no point devoting enormous efforts to making a new compiler only for it all to go away shortly afterwards. There is some reason to believe that eventually VB.NET will work on the Mac as it does on Windows, as a cross-platform solution. Until then, VBA macros need to be translated to AppleScript. There can be no better signal that MacBU is committeed to the Mac than to see the huge investment they have made in AppleScript. Office's AppleScript is already working as of Office and it mirrors the VBA model identically: macros can be translated to AppleScript _now_, and will then "just work" in the next version of Office too.

I pulled it from an old Tivo box.
Well then it's not exactly a Windows HD is it, more like a Linux HD...;)

It wouldn't hurt to wipe the partition table from Windows even if you don't use MacDrive. TiVos have lots of little partitions on the drive, some ext2, some MFS.

i am working on a Mac G5 that has a apparent hard drive issue. When I start the G5 it chimes and the Apple logo appears and the little wheel just spins and spins and never loads the OS. When i remove the hard drive and replace it and reboot the G5 i now get a blinking folder with a question mark. I tried several different replacement drives and get the same question mark icon. However, when i put the original hard drive back in I at least get the Apple logo and the spinning wheel..but still no OS loads......what up with dat...???

How about plug the ethernet straight into the iMac?

Seems really odd that both the TC and Express would have this problem at exactly the same time.

    Maybe give Apple a call.

I use MacBiff (http://www.forkit.org/macbiff/) for that purpose. It just sits in the menubar, and when I've got some mail, beeps and shows the number of new emails. Although you have to enter in your email server information, it doesn't get it from Mail.app, but it does support IMAP and POP, SSL, and multiple accounts.

The card only comes with fan-out cables (SFF-8087 to 4i*SATA/SAS ends; 1x per SFF-8087 port, so in the case of the ARC-1880ix12, it will come with 3x of them).

In theory, you could order the version of the Maxupgrades kit without the MiniSAS cable, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead and get it (it may be shorter, as those that come with the Areca are 0.5 meters in length). Assuming the cable with the kit is shorter, it won't be as messy as a longer cable could be in terms of routing (those that have used that particular kit haven't mentioned it was a mess that I recall).

You won't need any other cabling to connect the card to the HDD bays (it all comes in the MaxUpgrades kit).

If you want to use an internal port with an external enclosure, there's a special cable you'd need to get for this. If you want to use the external port (keep in mind, this typically shares ports with an internal connector in past models, such as the 1680 series), you'd need to buy one. Either way, these do not come with the card, and you'd only need to get them if you're planning on running an external enclosure/s.

BTW, stick to 1.0 meters or less with SATA disks (1.0 m tends to be the shortest you can get off the shelf, but other lengths are possible via a custom order - I've done this before), and do not use the PCI bracket mount adapters to take internal to external cables (results in instability due to contact resistance - been through this battle before). These adapters are meant to be used with SAS, which runs at a much higher signal voltage (20V) than internal SATA (400mV).

You don't need to use the older version of Firefox. I was referring to Safari in terms of older versions that had been tried and didn't work (not tried Safari 5, but given past revisions, I'd skip even trying it when I know Firefox will work properly).

As per how to do it, a browser works in any OS supported by the card (browser connects via an IP address assigned to the RAID card). Now the firmware is actually in 4 parts (i.e. what you'd get in a firmware download off of Areca's support site). Assuming you don't need to upgrade anything else, you just use EFI to replace BOOT.bin, which is the BIOS version (leave the others alone).

There should be instructions in the manual that comes with the card fif you're a bit confused (it's in the others, so it should be there this go around as well). There's also confirmation check boxes to be marked before any flash is actually performed anyway (nice little safety feature), so you can look around without causing problems.

    Thanks, you've really helped out.

One question that does come across though is once I flash the card with EFI and select the SSD as a boot drive from an existing OSX install I will want to install Mac OSX fresh on this now bootable SSD and ditch the default OSX installation on which I chose the SSD as the boot drive. Can I do this? Or must I clone the existing OSX install onto the new SSD drive first?

I was thinking after making the SSD boot drive I could simply boot off the OSX install discs and install OSX on this SSD?

It's going to be a new system with no important data, so I don't care about cloning the existing OSX install which comes on the 1TB HDD with the 8-core 2010 Mac Pro. In fact I am going to pull that drive out altogether.

Perhaps I am complicating things too much here and after flashing the card to EFI, I can just shut down, take out the original 1TB HDD with OSX. Start the PC, launch the Areca EFI RAID BIOS menu with the right key press, put the 2x SSD's in pass through mode and 4x 3TB in RAID5. Afterwards just boot off the OSX cd and it will see the 2x SSD drives and the RAID5 volume and just install OSX on one of the SSD's like I want? Will I have troubles installing Win 7 through bootcamp on the 2nd SSD drive when its running off the Areca in pass through mode ?

Also maybe you know, for installing 2x 6G SSD's in the 2nd 5'25" optical bay I obviously need either the OWC multimount adapter bracket 2.5 to 5.25 or other, but for power do I need a SATA power Y splitter or something to get power to both SSD's ? Both of these will be connected to the Areca in pass through mode, the length of the included miniSAS cable should be fine to reach to the SSD's in the optical bay right ?

Finally the one question that I can't find a definite answer to from anyone is if the X5690 Xeons will work in the 8-core Mac Pro, I know the X5680 do from others on this forum. OWC is offering the X5690 in their CPU upgrade options so I take it works. But maybe they flash/alter the EFI to support the microcode for the X5690 ?

Thanks, Dante. Your patient elucidation is much appreciated. I use my desktop for music production, and my laptop for everything else, including photoshop stuff for CD covers, etc.; the next step is consolidation into a single machine (now that I've sold off a ton of synth hardware and am more in-the-box). The color accuracy is obviously not the be-all and end-all for my applications, but I wouldn't want to save a couple of bucks and end up with something I couldn't use in everything I do.

I saw the HP in person today for the first time, and it does look great. As for the form factor element of the equation, I like the fact that it can be lowered on its stand to where the screen is almost sitting on the tabletop, and the screen can be turned L-R without moving the stand. I have a nice couch off to the side of my rig, where I'd like to be able to turn a 30" monitor for an occasional evening's DVD-viewing with friends, and hadn't yet figured out how this would "go" with an ACD (this studio arrangement is new; previously my couch was behind the main seating position at the rig).

Most of the above is doubtless more than you need or care to know, but let me finish my blathering by thanking you again. Best,

    vic

Convenience is the key. Everyone carries their cell phone with them so it's way more convenient to pull it out and play a casual game than a separate portable game device.

I think it's going to kill devices like the DS as the games get better and the smart phone platforms more powerful. It's not going to happen tomorrow, but portable game systems days are numbered.

Apple considers the warranty invalid. But if you should have any issues with the iPhone I would just restore the whole iPhone back to its normal settings and bring it in. But I'll be honest with you, ever since I've jailbroken my iPhone I haven't had any issues with it. I hope there are others out there who can attest to this too. But from my personal experience I haven't had any issues.

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first macrumors.com posting! Nice to meet you, *wave, wave*. :) Im a pretty indecisive person so the questions Ive been grappling with over the past few weeks have been pretty overwhelming! (Sorry for the long posting, but please read it. I need your help!)

Basically, heres the dilemma. My 12 Powerbook (bought in Aug 2003) stopped liking me sometime ago (about a year) and has been giving me kernel panics. Now I get them 2-3 times a day! (In fact, Im writing this posting in Word so I can save it because Ive had 2 kernel panics while writing this! Darn, I hope I can get something for it on eBay.) So it is definitely time to move on especially since Ive been to the Apple Store several times and they always have a different story as to how to fix it. And no I dont have Apple Care. (Most recently they told me it would cost $350 just to send it to CA to look at!! Forget that!)

So after reading several macrumors.com postings =) Ive decided to order a 14 iBook with Apple Care protection and a 60 GB iPod (w/ $179 education mail-in rebate). Problem is that I want to order an iBook special order with 80 GB (I need the extra 20 GB for all my graphic design stuff and Im terrified of external drives, have heard they die on people! Yikes!). The Apple Store in the mall wont do special orders in store so I have to order it online.

I heard that the Apple Credit Card is offering 120 days same as cash so I applied for it online and got approved for only enough to cover the laptop. But in order to get the $179 iPod rebate I have to order them both at the same time. Therefore I have to use 2 credit cards. Apple Online accepts only 1 credit card. Same goes for 1-800-My-Apple.

So I sauntered over to the Computer Store on campus. The people there were very friendly and helpful and offered to do a special order and use 2 credit cards. They also offered to call up Apple Credit Card and see if I could get 120 days same as cash even though its not directly from Apple. But they said No. So I waited a few days for inspiration to decide for me. Got worried about waiting (Sept 24th is last day for rebate and PB is failing) and so ordered from the Computer Store on campus, put down 10 percent, and walked away with a new 60 GB iPod.

Then this morning I got a call from Apple Credit Card saying that guess what? They got a call from someone (the computer store?) and now they can up my limit to just barely cover 14 iBook plus Apple Care plus 60 GB iPod. So now I can order it online. Good news and bad news. I called up the Computer Store and they said theyd cancel my order and refund my 10 percent down payment if I brought in the new 60 GB iPod that I would receive from the online order (I already opened the iPod I brought home from the store). But now Im wondering if its worth it to order it online anymore. I would save $120 tax plus $100 in finance charges and might be able to use a coupon code if I can find an unused one on this website. However Id have to go through the hassle of canceling my order from the Computer Store (plus my guilt that they went through all that trouble and didn't land a sale).

THE DECISION: I need to decide whether to order from Apple Education Online Store or from the Computer Store on campus. I NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO ASAP! (Because Ill have to cancel the order at the Computer Store very soon if I decide to do so!)

    Online Advantages:
    No Tax (saves $120)
    Maybe use coupon?
120 days same as cash financing (Saves about $100 or so)
Can charge everything to one finance-free card (refund $ to other CC used in down payment)
Less worry about whether the iPod rebate will be verified (no split payments and also direct from Apple)

    Online Disadvantages:
Hassle of canceling order at Computer Store & bringing back new online iPod
May not get Apple Care (I heard that if Apple notices that its sent to a FL address they cancel the Apple Care? Call and check?)
Must wait longer to get computer (comes from China, 1-2 weeks)
Can only talk to Apple Customer Service if there are problems
Purely speculation, but I hear that some iBooks are screwy and maybe direct from China iBooks are more screwy than if you order it from the store?

    In Store Advantages:
Get computer faster (Next Tuesday, Sept. 20)
Direct people I can talk to if I have any problems
Can order more products now on my increased limit Apple credit card since I've already charged part of my order to another card (Can order Apple Mouse and Keyboard and cases for iPod and iBook)

    In Store Disadvantages:
Wont get same-as-cash financing (Will lose about $100+)
Must pay Tax (Will lose about $120)
Must go to school to pick it up (not shipped directly)

P.S. Once I make my decision Ill post what option I decided to go with! Thanks for your help! :)

    1)The who cares line...love it...great reply.

2)The nonsense you speak of is why Amazon is killing the iPad as an e-reader. Don't believe me? Go read the tens of thousands of comments about how hard it is to read a book (not a website....not an email...a book) on an iPad.

We have both an iPad 1 and Kindle. Absolutely no comparison for reading books...iPad just stinks.

Who said anything about fail? You need to ease up and stick to the comments otherwise you look like a fool. Too late I guess.

I would not say the iPad stinks as an ereader, but the kindle is certainly better for reading books. I have read 15 to 20 full length books on my iPad, about the same on my phone, and hundreds on my kindle.

I travel a lot , so since I got my iPad, I do not bring the kindle (I have a DX). I am actually considering buying a little one just for novels, I got the DX for PDFs, a function the iPAD is 1000000 times better suited for.

All three devices are better than a PC for reading books. The order is clearly Kindle, iPad, iPhone.

Would be nice if Amazon could get the kindle to support some of the multimedia book features they do in the iOS and desktop apps. I am not even sure of the kindle itself supports the real page numbers the other apps support.

I have four AKG C 1000 S made in Austria,Ten or fifteen years old now but still up the job, a great vocalists mike, my quartet used them in several different studios because they were aimed at singers.

Well out of date now, but AKG must have updated them they were so popular, either Battery operated or phantom power. I am in the UK.

Hardly. The panel is a S-IPS LG.Philips LM230W02 (for the 23"). This is probably the very best panel you can buy anywhere for a 23/24". The displays you are talking about aren't similar displays at all - they are inferior PVA or TN types. Hence, the price. Faster response times (for gamers) don't appear in S-IPS panels - only in cheaper TN types.

A comparable display is the NEC LCD2490WUXi which you won't find for under about $1100. The ACD 23" is in fact for the quality of the display good value. The main problem with it is the lack of inputs and the 1 year-guarantee.

The only change that Apple could make to the 23" is to things like the inputs (which personally I would like to see) because there is no better panel. Of course they could change to a 24" but this is not a better panel. Just a slightly larger one.

One legit worry is if you buy the 23" now, and Apple changes to a 24" then buying a second panel will be a problem.

The above is the best summary post I have read concerning the actual VALUE of the ACD 23 and of the risk of mis-match if/when Apple changes it to a 24". But make no mistake, for the technology, the ACD 23 is priced correctly.

I'm puzzled as to why you chose 1.1.4 to restore with, Is that the last one you had when the ipod was working? There is a 1.1.5 which is the last release of 1.x, also there is 2.2.1 which is the last 2.x, and there is 3.1.3 which you have to buy for $5 in iTunes before you can install it.

What state is the ipod in now when you turn it on? Apple logo, or Connect to iTunes? Or blank screen?

If it was me I think I would buy the 3.1.3 for $5 and try to update to it. Here is a link which will open iTunes to the page where you can buy it:
    https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage
Use this on the last computer where you successfully synced the iPod. iOS 3.1.3 is the currently supported highest update for the Gen1. If it didn't work I would take to an Apple Store Genius Bar and tell them "Hey, I paid $5 for this 3.1.3 update and it didn't work, can you fix it?" Depends on whether you're willing to risk the $5 and have an Apple Store handy.
