    Hopefully it doesn't rain.

Cool, I'll update soon. Probably leaving in 20 minutes for Walmart to buy some supplies then off to the Apple store.

Yea, it is really Windy in Brigham City now and the Weather report says 70% Precipitation and a chance of Snow tonight with freezing temps.

This is going to play into the "Tonight or Tomorrow" showing up. It's so difficult to decide, Need to bring a Portable heater if I do.

    Hi,

Im thinking about buying a Mac Mini. I was going to opt for the non server version and get the 2.66ghz processor and the upgraded hard drive to 500GB.

My question is, is it a worthwhile upgrade? or is it just better to leave it with the 2.4ghz and get a better hard drive.

Regarding the hard drive, are you able to buy a faster one ie, one that runs at 7200rpm and put it in the mac mini yourself. I have heard that the drive in the Mac Mini is a slow hard drive.

What is the biggest hard drive that will work in the Mac Mini?

    Many Thanks

I'm thinking around the time the Nehalem Mac Pros come out. End of this year, maybe.

Took Apple a year and a half to update the original Mac Pro - you think they will close the gap between the current and next-gen to below 12 months??!

Anyway... I'm holding out for an ACD announcement... and nothing. It's been two years without change, that's crazy. Has forced me to consider Dell... :(

Thats basically what Charlie said on his twitter, which is that the exploit doesn't work on 4.3

No the website that the guy was kind enough to provide says something a little more subtle. And if that source is reliable, Apple ought to release 4.3.1. It says the exploit itself fails, but the vulnerability still remains, whatever that means. My guess is they are suggested the exploit could be updated to work on 4.3. The threat is not been permanently closed.

The Centris 660av was one of the shortest-lived Apple models, and I would guess it was one of the rarest. It was only in production for two months before it was replaced with the almost-identical Quadra 660av (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Quadra_660AV). (The Centris name had been introduced as a "low end" Quadra with the Centris 610, but after the 660av came out, they merged the brands for simplification purposes.)

I have what is, last time I checked, a working Centris 660av. Well, the hard drive is gone, but it has an external SCSI drive that boots it. That drive could probably be put inside.

I am in the process of moving, and really need to down-size my stuff. The Centris has no use to me (it's 25 MHz... yes Mega), but I love the kitschiness of how rare it was.

I saw one go on eBay for $10. Hardly a fitting end for such a cool Mac (a pizza box, as these models were called). Can anyone help me find a better home for it?

Yes, and that got me looking for a link to "contribute." But I couldn't find one. :D

What happened to the positive/negative rating system? Did its value go from worthless to pathetically useless?

Still, I liked the ratings, it gave an overall sense to the story (sometimes).

Besides that, A+ on the site so far.

Windows: a 32 bit shell running on a 16 bit extension of an 8 bit OS designed for a 4 bit CPU, made by a 2 bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

    Cheers

Now we can add "A 64 bit hack of a 32 bit shell..." to the beginning.

Yeah, this joke has been around forever. It originally was used when Windows 95 first came out. It isn't technically valid for NT, 2000, XP, or Vista. Those are just 32-bit (or 64-bit) OSes by a 2 bit company. :-D

The reason I used a computer based VPN server is because the Apple Time capsule does not have VPN built in. If your router can serve as a VPN server, use your router.

    What router do you have?

I have a buffalo WHR-HP-G54 flashed to the latest DDWRT Flash that has VPN services ........

So, now Zune software is gonna compete with Windows Phone 7?

I thought the same thing. They can't just pull the plug when they've poured so many millions into it; It's a bad idea, just cut your losses and move forward. Don't keep trying to keep a bad brand alive.

Granted, I am in a way sorry to see it go. That Zune HD really did look cool. I almost wanted to buy one. Almost.

    Try the non-GUI FSCK.

Hold down Command + V when you push the power button to turn the computer on. When the screen turns black you can let go of the keys. It'll show its verbose startup sequence and eventually get to a point where it's prompting for commands.

Enter: fsck -y and press Enter.

It'll run through the file system check..and this may take awhile. It'll tell you if it finds anything and then automatically correct it. When it finishes, it'll put the command prompt back up. Rerun the command until it says that no changes were made.

Edit: When you're all done, type reboot and hit enter at the prompt. Your Macbook should then start back up normally.

If he REALLY thinks that "These people" do not help anyone, I invite him to produce his next "film" with his own home made camera (some rich bastard no doubt invented all these nice cameras for his own benefit), build his own theater for showings (Bastard rich multimedia conglomerations!) in the nude (bastard clothiers trying to make a profit from keeping people clothed!) with his own 2 hands (Bastard tool corporations!).

Let's see these millionaire engineers and industrial designers that make the cameras, home theater equipment (not to mention the factory workers!), and designers/factory workers that make the clothing.

Why is it, that paying a factory worker $25 an hour with benefits infuriates the hell out of people on this forum up and down, but heaven forbid we try not to reward someone that bankrupts companies with millions of dollars. One is trying to feed their family and the other is trying to put thousands of people out of work.

If there's one thing I'll never understand, it's why so many poor->low middle class people are conservative. I'll NEVER understand that. It's like you willingly like to shoot yourself in the foot. WTF?!

I wonder if this is why Fox news is the only TV news network on Dish's cheapest package. Hrmmm!

Really though, you're giving far, far too much credit to the CEOs and almost no credit to the people that actually do the work. What kind of education does the average CEO have? Usually at best, an MBA, and the successful ones tend to come from Harvard or Yale, but not all. Steve Jobs was a college dropout that loaded up on drugs. He has a company with some of the most talented engineers and designers in the industry that make the products they sell.

Having someone with common sense and good taste doesn't mean they have to be a 60 gazillion billionaire. What about MS? I've pointed out time and again that if it was banned nationwide for governments to pay for MS site licenses, MS would probably go broke in about a year. They've pretty much finagled their way into making site licenses mandatory for every public institution (backed with lawsuits, audits, and lots of intimidation)

The was always like the drunk 16 year old girl who arrives at a party in 4am and wonders why everyone is going home.

Though there wasn't anything that tragic about the Zune it just arrived on the Marketplace by far too late to gain any momentum or traction. The other main issue was that it was supposed to be the "first" real competition for the iPod yet it couldn't do anything better than an iPod, the *only* real thing it had upon release over the iPod was an FM tuner (BFD)...

Again I am really surprised they didn't spin off the XBOX360 success with a more integrated or game based Zune, it would have been a winner IMHO.

I don't think we're ever going to have a shortage of wealthy and powerful people; even authoritarian government have their share of plutocrats. I also question the notion that the acquisition of wealth is always assumed to have been legitimately "worked for" or "earned". ENRON, Madoff, the banks during the credit crunch....

As evidence that some rich people didn't earn their wealth, you just referenced Enron that went bankrupt, Madoff who went to prison, and the Banks who we bailed out... and would have otherwise gone bankrupt. So, essentially three examples where the free market either did or would have (without government intervention) correctly punished bad businesses. Odd choice.

At any rate, you're putting words in my mouth. We all collectively decide how to govern ourselves, and it's not always the case that a simple majority is enough to implement changes to the status quo. Also, it has been demonstrated time and time again that a small number of wealthy and powerful people can get their way in the face of overwhelming opposition from less wealthy and powerful people. It cuts both ways. You seem to be trying to characterize any increase in taxes on the rich as a form of theft perpetrated by the rest of the nation; that's a very twisted take on the concept of taxation.

Hardly. All I'm trying to do is better understand your position. You seem to take the position that the majority or mob rule can decide how much money to take from one person without inflicting the same on another person... in effect choosing winners and losers. Furthermore, you seem to not put any limit on this position so it would seem that you feel the majority has the right/ability to take as much money from 'the rich' as they choose to as long as they do it with a majority in the democratic process. This would imply that you don't think that the person who actually earned the wealth has any sort of moral or legal claim on the wealth. Please enlighten me as to where I am going astray in describing your position.

i did try setting compatibility mode in windows xp, it runs but its sort of buggy and crashes often, i would imagine it would be buggy under windows 7 too.

Parallels and vmware are too expensive for me, virtualbox is free but win98 runs very slowly and doesnt support guest additions, not to mention it crashes whenever vt-x is enabled

    any other ideas? :)

So I've been thinking about the Apple TV and what it could mean for console gaming should Apple release the App Store on this device.

    Apple TV
    $99
    Internet connected
    No subscription fee
    Upcoming.. App Store

This could be the perfect trojan device for Apple to enter, and potentially disrupt, the console gaming market. In particular, it could overtake the downloadable stores of the console makers such as XBLA, PSN and WiiWare.

The device is cheaper and more accessible than any of the consoles, games would be cheap, there is brand recognition of Apple as well as established games such as Angry Birds and there are tonnes of controllers out there in iPhones and iPod touches.

Do you think Apple could really disrupt this market should it release an App Store for the Apple TV?

I've written a blog post about it if you'd like to read more http://nxtgn.tumblr.com/post/1078584913/how-apple-could-disrupt-the-console-gaming-market-with

Ah, but YOU'RE missing the point completely. As resolutions inscrease the interface can scale up because it is resolution independent in 10.5. Web pages are NOT resolution independent for the most part.

Fear not sir, the WebKit team is already working on resolution independence. I'm pretty sure that some of the web specifications are being upgraded to provide resolution scalability as well. (For instance providing a choice between two resolutions for the same image on the page.) Alas, the web is such a clusterf* of randomly assorted technologies, most of which were never intended to scale to hi-res displays, so I expect the transition to be long and painful, but I trust that the Web Kit team will come up with clever ways to carefully scale up the content.

Can another company even sell music at less than $0.99? Apple has been tight with the record companies to keep the price that low. The only "competition" that could be considered cheaper would be a subscription model of music sales/rental. However, does Apples DRM even support the features necessary for a subscription model? DVD Jon can only break DRM, not add new features to it, and the devices it plays on (iPod)
