Along with the recent encouraging 3Q 2006 financial results (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/07/20060719164004.shtml) from Apple on Wednesday, independent research firms Gartner and IDC have recently reported on 2Q 2006 market share (http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/07/20/marketshare/index.php) (via MacWorld). Both firms report solid gains from 1 year ago, with IDC reporting a jump from 4.4 to 4.8% U.S. Marketshare and Gartner reporting a jump from 4.3 to 4.6%, making the Mac maker the 4th largest maker of computers behind Dell (32%), HP (18.9%), and Gateway (6.2%).
This is the first reported gains in marketshare for Apple since the Intel transition, as last quarter saw minor losses (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/06/20060601164133.shtml). From last quarter, it appears as though Apple has gained an entire percentage point in market share (up from 3.5-3.6% 1Q 2006).

Personally it's a lot easier to swallow $99 a year for a new Apple TV (set top box) than $999 a year for a new Apple branded television.

Here in the Netherlands we have Sinterklaas, he comes to us first by steamship, and then on a white horse. It is that important that the TV shows him arriving direct, plus tens of thousands are on the quayside.

Yeah. Every child grows up with Sinterklaas. You can see it as Santa, only this one comes from Spain by boat.(according to the old tradition:D). Most children stop believing in the real existence of Sinterklaas at the age of 9 or 10. But it's always a lot of fun, though. :cool:

Edit: Got out of the hospital and have been sleeping mostly since then. Now I wait for the biopsy results. Thanks for all those concerned.

One way to elimate scratches :)
Maybe not just scratches, but fingerprints, too. If a new iPod has a screen that ends up taking up the whole front, this may be a good way to keep the front cleaner. Iirc it was one of the major complaints of a video device released by Olympus sometime back. The device had a touch screen.

I've been an AAPL shareholder on and off since 1982. The company has NEVER been healthier or hotter than it is now. We all know about the record sales of Macs, iPods, iPhones, etc. I was at a major shopping center on weekday afternoon a few days ago, and the Apple Store was literally the only store in the mall that could have been classified as "busy" (and not just with lookers but with buyers).
But you have to distinguish AAPL the stock from Apple the company. In the long term, the two are essentially the same thing, but in the short term the two are merely related. The short-term performance of AAPL the stock is affected by turmoil in the stock market, as well as by speculators hoping to make fast money by buying or selling AAPL for near-term gains. These factors can temporarily drive the stock down (or up) for reasons that have little to do with the company's actual performance.
In the long term, though, if Apple the company does well, AAPL the stock will do well, too.
So, where is AAPL going from here? Hard to say... I'm currently "long" on AAPL, so obviously I'd like to see it go up. However, it's quite possible that it could go lower from here -- perhaps much lower (below $100 even). One of the most common valuation statistic for stocks is the price/earnings (P/E) ratio. Right now, AAPL's P/E is around 30. Compared to competitors like Hewlett-Packard (HPQ; p/e: 16) and Microsoft (MSFT; p/e: 21), AAPL's multiple is high. Over the last few years, AAPL's higher P/E has been justified because earnings have been growing much faster than the earnings of its competitors. good to see the high end iMac has a more respectable GPU this time. thunder bolt this, thunder bolt that. If I got it, I probably won't put it to use for a long while. My 2010 i5 Quad is still kickin' speedily so I'll just wait for another 2 years till there's a freshly designed iMac. I'm most impressed with the GPU upgrade this time around. 256bit/1 or 2 gig DDR5. That's pretty sweet.

Apple pays 70% straight to the record companies, which would be $0.90. If Amazon pays the same, then they have $0.21 loss before they even start. Or Amazon gets different prices than Apple, which would need some explaining.
How do you know this? Just curious. I've heard all sorts of numbers bandied about, but yet to see a confirmation as to the distribution.
I'm not a lawyer, but why does it need any explaining? Could it be that Amazon was better at negotiating than Apple, and got a better deal from the content providers? Is there a legal reason that Amazon cannot get more concessions and thus a lower price than does Apple?

I think they will come either this last update or the next one. As if you look at the hourly graphs for any team a huge spike existed for the last hour. This is probably stanford processing log files. It may take time for them all to be processed.
