Are they doing the ads the same way the nytimes has been doing the ads?

Which hijack your screen every now and then for an ad -- before sending off to the link you clicked.

    I hate when that happens.
Or when something is flying on your screen, like a giant kite.
Those animated ads that hijack the screen are out of control!

You can't use a disk that came with another mac. You need to use a full retail version. Also you will need to do a clean install, you can't do an upgrade install coming from Tiger.

Will I be able to put the retail version on a flash drive? Because my dvd drive is pretty much busted.

Would it be possible just to clone my Macbook 6,1 HDD and restore it to the HDD on the 1,1?

There are a lot of lessons to be learned here. It's a new world out there.

I just couldn't believe how quickly the entire thing escalated!

    This is what I'm doing:

I'm buying a refurbished iPad Wi-Fi 16GB directly from Apple (it's like new) and use it less than 14 days. Then I'm going to return it.

No not at all. It's bassicly to try out and see what apple can offer.

Besides that i will do some small gaming, but this can't be considered as an issue.

Out of curiosity, why did you use a third party charger? I've done it a few times with other devices, but it's always been with quality, branded chargers (like charging my Kindle with my BlackBerry's charger), but I wouldn't dare do that with my iPad unless I knew it was top quality since so many of those third party chargers, like third party batteries, can damage your equipment.

By the way, I think using a third party charger may have voided your warranty anyway. At least on some devices I'm pretty sure it does.

No way third party chargers void warranty, if it did, we wouldn't have a single Apple device left with any warranty.

Anyway, OP is in luck, as 4.3.1 JB just came out. So he can just restore to that and see if that fixes his problem.

    I have 3 questions

    1. at the Tiger release did everyone get scratch off cards?

    2. ^^ Did everyone receive the 10% discount along with the scratch cards?

3.If I were to buy an iMac that night with the 10% discount can i get that on top of my education discount?

There is a minor difference - the new iMacs have an ambient light sensor which will provide ideal brightness whether you are in a dark or well-lit environment.

From Apple's site: "To conserve power and relieve eyestrain, a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the screen brightness on MacBook, MacBook Pro and iMac to suit the ambient light of whatever room youre in."

    Hi there,

If you don't mind, can you link me to the info on the ambient light sensor on the new iMac's?

If you wipe the SSD, as the OP indicated, there IS no Safari history left.... or Safari.

I know, it was just a wee bit of humour. ;)

I say sell the older machine... and get the new 12"iBook and the 20" iMac G5. :D I have the combo and I love it. Honestly, I can't see the need for power (for most students) in a portable... save some money by having a more powerful desktop and a nice portable that can easily handle the basics and then some.

10.6.5 from what I can tell

Custom 10.6.5 made specifically for that model line. As far as I know, there are only 10.6.0 and 10.6.3 retail Snow Leopard disks.

The official TRIM support is already in Snow Leopard builds for the new Macbook Pros with SSDs and it's in Lion as well. The official support is only for the Apple's SSDs, no TRIM support for third party SSDs. There is a way to enable it for any SSD that supports TRIM, but it is a hack. Here's the thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1125400

Apple are usually conservative about their SSDs, they don't go for the top of the line SSDs. So, it is normal to see conservative speed from Apple's SSDs.

You can always downgrade, unless there's something in 4.3.1 you really need.

I concur, external is the way to go. Dlink and others make some relatively inexpensive external enclosures that can hold 2, 4 or more drives, depending on your budget; you buy your own drives, whatever size you want, say 2x2TB drives and configure the enclosure (not all do this) with RAID 1, that way you have redundancy if one drive fails. This is what I would suggest you look into, its not that expensive and provides lots of space and protection from drive failure. Most of these enclosures are USB, some, usually more expensive, offer firewire or network connectivity.
